Mazda Extended Warranty - Worth it?
 

I am thinking on purchasing the extended warranty on my 8, but am wondering if anyone who has had it, and needed to use it, would tell me if the fel it was worth purchasing.

I am going to get some more info from a dealership. But maybe some peple can give me their opinions also, since it means more to me coming from owners, not dealers.

Are there even mazda extended warranties offered directly from the dealer?

You're usually better off buying the warranty directly from the company who does the warranty than buying from your dealer, who just adds to the price tag.

Yes there is a Mazda Extended Warranty program.There are several plans with differeing time periods and levels of coverage.They are not cheap!I have a 7year/100kmile bumper to bumper plan on my 2001 Millenia S----but nothing has failed on this car so far.
Your Mazda dealer should have a brochure describing the various plans.
My take is it is worth it if you intend to keep your car a long time and/or it has some really expensive parts.
I did not bother with this plan on the RX-8 because it is not that expensive for me to repair it.

Is the plan from Mazda themselves? My dealer tried to pawn off on me some plan that they had nothing to do with - the dealer makes a cut of the profit for each plan sold.

Yep,it's called MAP warranty here in Canada(Mazda Added Protection).They should have the brochures at the dealer.It may not be available if you did not purchase(lease) the car from new.

as long as it's a mazda sactioned warranty, its most likely worth it. It's those 3rd party, unnamed warrantys that screw everyone over.

My dealer didn't even try and sell me an extended warranty...oddly enough, i had to ask about it. Kinda weird, eh?

The price of major engine labor on the 8 seems astromical, hence why i picked up a 100K warranty by choice. As long as you can afford it, the "better safe than sorry" approach is just simply the safest way to go.

To kind of shed some more light no my situation; I am driving a lot right now. up to 80 miles a day, and I am kind of worried that there might be some engine failure in the future. My warranty is almost up now. I have put about 16k on my car in the last 7 months. So if I get a warranty like the 100k stated above, I would not have to worry from approx. another 2 years.

any thoughts?

Why should you buy an extended warranty? Shouldn't a company be producing goods that last and work well beyond that of their regular warranty period? Why should I BUY a warranty to cover the possibility of defects that the manufacturer should take care of in their initial durability testing? Why should I support a company that doesn't make goods that last well into the foreseeable future in a dependable fashion?

Sure, eventually the car will have a problem, but the problems that it has generally won't outprice the cost initially of the cash outlay for the extended 'warranty'. You'll never 'make money' off of it - if you did, then other companies wouldn't try to make money off of you selling you the extended warranty.

We bought it through maxda 5 yr- 100,000 warranty , but only have 24000 on the car so far only recalls everything covered through mazda so far
Also bought the wheel warranty pakage

Always ask what the dealers cost of the warranty is and then negoeate from there.
If you buy a warranty from a indepedent make sure you know up front what it covers, also with new parts or used ??

I got the 7 year/100,000 mile warranty on mine for around $1400. This was mainly in case any of the computer modules went as I have heard they can be upwards of $2000 a piece. Whether that's entirely true or not I couldn't tell you but I went in for the "better safe than sorry" approach. I may never need to use it, but then again, I just might. For the people that never need to use them, they consider it a waste of money. For the people that do need to use them, they are glad they got them.

when i bought my car I was driving 800 miles a week for work, and I did put about 20K on the car pretty fast.... (im sitting at 30K right now)

I regret getting the extended warrenty. At the time of buying I wanted to make sure i was covered as I plan on keeping this a long time, however I didnt' know of the "MOD BUG" and such.

I'm itching to put a turbo on but am waiting for the 2nd Gen kits to come out and run thru the ringer a few times (PTP, Mazsport Scotts, maybe even Petit's and Axial Flows SC kits)

This was the 1st time I ever bought a car on my own and learned a lot, i know I got a pretty good deal but I would never buy an extended warrenty again.

Since the car has a four year warranty, you're basically covering yourself against something failing in years 5, 6 or 7.

If a major repair would be a big problem for you, and you're just keeping the car for seven years, that provides a safe position.

In general, if you figure the odds, extended warrantees are not worth it. They're just like insurance - most people pay more in premiums than they ever collect in claims, but if you get zapped by the big one there it is.

The odds of a major component failing in years 5,6,7 are not really that great. Stuff will fail early on, or way later - the old bathtub curve. Figure the odds, and you can make a rational decision on how to deal with the post-warranty years.

pretty much yeah... if i put a turbo or supercharger on, there goes my warrenty I paid for... in effect making the "price" of the turbo about 1500-2000 dollars more (i forget what i paid)

In general extended warranties are for suckers. I'd be shocked if these warranty programs were really through Mazda (except the Canadian program) and not just through a second party that has a deal worked out with Mazda or certain dealerships.

When Mazda NA sends you paperwork on your extended warranty, sounds pretty safe to say it's legit from them. Sounds rather BS-free to me. And i'm not a sucker...i asked for it.

I pretty much agree that, for the majority, an exxtended warranty is another 'sale' for the car company, and yes stuff should last 5,6,7 years, but I am worried about the rx8. Since it seems to have a pretty bad track record.

If it was another car, I might not be so worried.
