Lucky SOB, I'm still waiting to hear about mine. :fingersx: I got less than 45k on mine. Second owner. She wouldn't start, figured it was flooded but my folks couldn't get it started either using the de-flooding procedures. Got it sent to the dealership and they said it failed the compression test. They said in order to get it warrantied they need to make sure the emissions system passes all readiness tests. BUT, since the battery died it erased all that data so they need to run and drive the vehicle to recreate the "readiness" information. They said this can take several days and it's driving me MAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!:SHOCKED::Eyecrazy: :wallbash::pfanndina Oh they haven't asked for maintenance records ro anything yet. I don't have them anyway. Didn't know they extended the warranty till i joined rx8club. |
I didn't need to provide records either. I have them on hand just in case though.

not quite sure how would emissions system readiness tests be relevant to getting a new engine, especially if it failed compression test..
what wold happen if you had a catless midpipe on the car? that in no way, shape or form could cause an engine failure? |

That's what they descibed as the deciding factor from what i got after reading there reply. This is what they said. "The engine failed the compression test in all but one chamber so the engine will need to be replaced. Mazda does have some extended warranty coverage on the RX8 rotory engine but only under very specific cirumstances. To fall under that warranty we need to perform some other tests to the vehicle and make sure the emissions system passes all readiness tests. The problem is when the vehicle's original battery went dead it erased all that data so we need to run and drive the vehicle to recreate the "readiness" information. We are in the process of doing that, but it takes time. If all emission systems pass we might be able to warranty a large portion of the engine replacement. |

It takes, what, half an hour to run through all the items needed for the Drive Cycle? And it should have said the WHOLE portion of the engine replacement. Clarify those two bits with your dealer. You can even send them the instructions on doing the drive cycle, since they don't seem to know what it involves. BC. |

Also, they called to tell me Mazda is going to replace the plugs for me free of charge. I replaced them 500 miles ago :p . All labor is covered so I had them replace the wires and filters while they're at it.

That's pretty awsome. I'm hoping I'm as fortunate. It's been two days and i haven't gotten any word on a decision yet. which leads to more of this of course. :wallbash: What about a rental. Did they hook you up or offer it? |

Just to be clear. Mazda is doing / has done the following under the warranty (and not out of my pocket)
Compression Test Check Spark Plugs Check Fluid Levels Replace Engine Replace Sparks (Even though mine where only 500 miles old) Replace Fluids Not covered Coil replacement Air Filters Spark plug wire replacement Since the labor was covered by Mazda, no labor costs where applied to the coils, filters, and wires. I didn't bring any maintenance history when I asked them to look at my car. I just set an appointment, asked them to check the engine since the warranty expires soon, and went from there. They did all the tests under the warranty and notified me of everything they could replace while the engine was out. It took a few extra days to get the coils due to the earthquake in Japan. |

4000 miles and new engine
I just joined the new engine club. I got my 2004 RX-8 on 13 JUly 2003 and had 2 months left on the 8 year warranty. It was getting hard to start,low on power and finally just failed to start.
Had it towed in and the analysis was like all the above replacements. All I paid for was new coils and plug wires. Just got it back yesterday and it sure runs great. It took the dealer 2 weeks to get er done. I dodged a big bill by 2 months |

Just to attest to Mazda's good service, my sister's then fiance bought her a brand new 2006 Mazda 3 and she essentially ignored the oil for the first 10000 miles of the engine's life. Started hearing a clicking noise and took it to a shop (not mazda) where they told her there was no oil in her engine. They put oil in but when she took it to Mazda and they said her engine was destroyed they still replaced it despite knowing that she didn't put the oil in and was completely at fault for her negligence. I just wanted to slap her for being a moron.

While it was great of Mazda to replace your sister's engine after she completely ignored it for 10k miles, they shouldn't have.
In fact, there are way too many people who deserve to have their engine's replaced under warranty, yet don't get taken care of, but then your sister gets a new engine that she clearly doesn't deserve. Life isn't always fair. BC. |
