Manual Reverse Question
I picked up my Brilliant Silver GT last week ($25,500) and I'm having a hell of a time putting it in reverse. I push the gear knob down and put in neutral, but it just does not want to go down into reverse. It takes me 4-5 times to get it to go and that's with all my strength (not so strong female).
Is this normal for this car??????? |
it just takes a little practice; once you get it, youll get it but it doesnt go in that easy; put it in neutral first, then push directly down wit hthe stick; while holding it down, itll slip into sixth;

agreed. try putting it in first (with the clutch in) and then put it in reverse. on a lot of manuals putting it in 1st allows u to then go into reverse.
any1 correct me if im wrong. :) |

I have to agree. Putting this car into reverse at times is a pain in the ass.

Wow I'm really impressed with your restraint guys! Not one "use the search function" even though this has been covered roughly 2,000 times! I should have introduced myself as a girl up front so I could get the same treatment :mdrmed:

My car sometimes doesn't go into reverse either. However, the only way I can get mine to go is to put it in neutral and let the clutch out and then go to reverse. It slides right in.

^ I do this techique too.
Another way to handle a half stuck-in reverse is to release the clutch slowly while pulling back on the shift knob until it slides into reverse. Faster than doing the release and depress the clutch in neutral thing. That reverse gear can be finicky. |

Now that I think about it, I do this a lot too. It works well. :) |
I've done that too, but I don't like myself afterwards. Seriously. There's something about that method that I feel is not good, can't put my finger on it though, other than the possibility of grinding. I highly prefer the release/depress of the clutch in neutral.

because of the Axial Flow Short Shifter, i never had this problem.

Its designed this way so you wont accidently pop into reverse when you TRY to shift into 4th.

I've shifted my 5-speed Infinity into "6th" more than once, thank God I didn't then release the clutch! :eek:

Ha, ha. When I first picked up my car I drove it over to the fabric store that was next to the dealership. When I was getting ready to leave I had intended to just pull forward out of my space since there was nobody in front of me or near me (except my mom parked right next to me). When we got done shopping several hours later someone was parked in front of me so I had to back out at an uphill angle no less while trying to re-learn driving a manual. I wasn't totally aware of the push straight down and then over thing trying to put it into reverse. I had read in the manual "down and over" but I wasn't equating that with push straight down in my head. After a few tries and then inching ever so slowly closer to the car in front of me since I wasn't in reverse my mom asked me what my problem was. I said I couldn't seem to get it into reverse but I knew it had to because they had to back it out of the bay in the shop where it was when I first got there to pick it up (hiding it on me, lol) and I watched them back it into position right in front of the showroom doors when it was ready for me. She was having trouble, too, and I told her you were supposed to push down and then over into reverse. She was like "Oh, you have to push straight down when it is in neutral" and was pushing straight down on it and then moving it. Then I felt kinda stupid. :) A few times I have thought I didn't have it in reverse when I did this, but it's always been when I was somewhere I could test it out without hitting something if I wasn't and I've always been in reverse.

It takes 2 clicks on the gear knob to know that reverse is properly engagaed

I was planning on taking the car in today to have the cluth adjusted, but perhaps I'll cancel. I almost had the car towed the first day I had it because I couldn't figure out how to get it in reverse! I'll try all the methods people suggested.
P.S. - I did do a search before posting, but I honestly didn't find anything related to my quesitons |
If you move it toward 5th any it will not allow it to go into reverse at all. Sometimes what I do is put it in 6th, push down on it, then move it up and to the right at the same time. It will usualy slide right in. Then simply pull back.

When I replaced my tranny/rear diff oils with Redline I could swear I noticed easier shifting including reverse...might just be in my head but that's what it felt like. Might want to consider trying that, maybe a short shifter too.

I was wondering can the car accidentally do into reverse when you are trying to put it into 6th? Because when i think of that it scares me like for example when you are on highway and you try to shift it into 6ht and accidenatlly shift into reverse that would kill me.

I know on my wrx the reverse gear is a straight cut gear with no syncro so sometimes it was a real PITA. What most people have already recomended with going to first than to reverse worked the best on that car.
