Maintence and you

Just out curiousity, around how many miles do you guys change your tires/plugs/wires/tranny fluid/brake fluid, and things like that.

Just wanted to see if any of you guys did yours sooner than the scheduled maintence or if you try to squeeze as much out of everything you can and keep on trucking a little longer than usual :)

Any info would be great, thanks in advanced.

I've read through the premix thread, good stuff. Decided to not do it.

Unless there's a little gooey center of maintence and care about when people changed their plugs/fluid then I'm a gonna have to say I'm a little confused as to why you posted these here :)

Just do your maintenance according to the schedule #2 in your manual. Thats for harsh duty cycle.

Oil - Full Synthetic, 5w30, Every 1500-3500 miles
Coolant - Every year, does not matter how many miles
Tranny and Rear Diff Oil - Full Synthetic, 75w90, Every year or every 15000 miles
Plugs - Stock, Set of 4, Every year or 15000 miles.
Coils - set of 4, Depends, but I will change them out again next spring, just to make sure my car is running in top condition.
Brake Fluid - DOT 4 recommend, do NOT use DOT 5, DO NOT USE DOT5 !!!!! Every year. Do it when you know the day is super dry. Cuz Brake Fluid love moisture. and it turn into water in no time (if its wet/rain out there)
Tires - it really depends on a lot of factors, me, I drive like nuts, I got all season tires and a set of Winter tires. All season one has a 400 rating, Im expecting it to last at least 30K miles or when it gets to a point that I no longer feels safe to drive in. Winter set, I think it should last me at least 3-4 winter.
Air Filter - Not sure what you have, if Stock, do it maybe every 10-15K miles or so. I have cone shape K&N, so it traps dirt like nuts, I clean them every 5K miles or less (!!!), while you're cleaning Air Filter, Clean your MAF sensor with Electric Safe Spray as well.
Cabin A/C Filter - its behind the glove box, easy to change, 10 minutes job, change it around 15K miles, or else its gonna smell like rotten eggs.

The log of my first 100,000 miles is in the first post.

DIY can save ya a lot of money, PLUS !

After hours and hours of sweat and tears(maybe not tears :)), when you're finally done, take a step back, and look at your 8 again ... that feeling is ... priceless.

Sidus 11-20-2007 09:24 AM

yes! i can feel that

but my car is too low, i cant find any jack that can fit in under my side skirt
too many mis. stuff about my 8 need to be taken care of...sigh...

protocol 11-20-2007 09:27 AM

I use to when I first got the car. But now only thing I do is change or add the oil when the check engine light comes on.

I guess after a while when you have something, to me that is "It's just another car". I know, so sad, but loved it when I first got it though.

A little overkill if you ask me, but all in all i doubt you'll have any problems with the car taking that good care of it.

Shini 11-20-2007 03:09 PM

Hey guys, thanks for the great info. Think I have an idea around where I'm going to do my stuff.

As far as oil changes go, I go to Bolton Oil Change (It's an area wide place I think, really good guys).

I remember the first time I went there and asked to have my little sticker changed from 3000 to atleast 5000 or 7500 (<-- That's what the dealer said, but uhhh...Seems a little astronomically high for me!)

They just stared at me.

Jedi54 11-20-2007 05:37 PM

I agree with Nycgps on pretty much ALL of those.
  • Oil: Every 3,000 miles. Synthetic is optional, I use Castrol 5w-20
  • Transmission: Redline fluids once a year. (don't forget the differential)
  • Coolant fluids: Once a year
  • Spark Plugs: 25,000 - 30,000
  • Coils: might as well change with plugs

Juice 11-20-2007 06:39 PM

OIL - Every 3k Miles, just swithced to Royal Purple 5w30 and it seems like the car is running smoother (Idles smooth at 800rpm, smooth power up until redline)

TRANS/DIFF - First change at 1500 miles (after Trans is broken it real well) then every 15K using Royal Purple (big improvement over stock)

COOLANT - Every 15k, might as well do it with the Trans/Diff fluids since the car is already raised.

PLUGS/COILS/WIRES - Haven't replaced anything yet, seems just as strong as when I drove it off the lot but I am planning to replace at 25k (car has 20k on it now)

TIRES - Depends on what tires you have and what you drive like. Stock Bridgestones were done at 15k (I drove like an ass for the first 5k miles). Replaced with T1-Rs and they have shown very little wear in 5k miles. Its a good idea to rotate your tires with the oil change to prevent uneven wear, if uneven wear is detected then you should check your tire pressures and get an alignment done.

I agree with most of what Nycgps and Jedi have said but it does seem extreme to change the diff/trans/coolant every year thats why I gave the miles I change things. Mabe its just me though and every year is neccessary for those who drive alot of miles per year. I have only driven 20k miles in over 2.5 years (less than 8k a year)

bigireland 11-22-2007 06:29 AM

just got my 8 back with a new tranny today (clutchmaster stage1/fidanza flywheel too, but that's a whole other thread).. that said, this is just what i was looking for.. info on fluid change intervals for the transmission..
