Lock car while warming up with smart key

Its pretty cold out. I like to warm up my car in the morning for a few minutes. Or perhaps I may go into a store and want to leave my car running while I go in. It seems to me that I should be able to lock the car and take the smart key in with me while it is still running outside. However it wont let me.

Has anybody else with the smart key been able to do this? Maybe there is a step I am missing. If its not possible, has anybody been able to re-wire something to fool the lock system into thinking the car is not running?

Obviously not a real big deal but it sure would be a nice feature to have if it were possible. Thanks.

I've been thinking the same thing.
I don't think the key is too "smart" to keep the car unlocked, if it's not in/near the car. Also, the car shouldn't be able to drive, without the key being in the car!!! IMHO, I'm not a fan of the "smart" key design by Mazda.

I tried several combinations from locking with key to access button on handle... Just the beeps and nothing.

And yeah tell me about it, I thought for sure that when it was running without the key in it would shut off the moment the clutch is pushed in. or the brake is touched like a car with automatic start. Kinda unnerving knowing that somebody can just drive off with my car. I know the right answer is kill it and take the key. But most of my cars before this were p.o.s beaters that I didn't really care about. Hopping out for a few into the convenience store with the engine still idling is easy to do.

Besides for that I'm a huge fan of the smart key. I love the convenience on just having it in my pocket and that's it. and i love the access buttons on the doors and truck for getting in or locking it.

Title edited. Thanks

In most places it's illegal to leave an unattended car running. Even if it's a POS beater, some jerk might decide to jump in and take a joy ride if it's also unlocked. Wise of you to check out if you can at least lock it, but it sounds like turning it off will be less trouble. As well as more legal.

Your title edit does not seem to have made it to the forum view. But the original made sense. I figured you were hopping into the convenience store to pick up a bagel and cream cheese to go along with that lox. :)

There is a technology that you could start your car with just a remote. Why not look into that, rather than leaving your car unattended and might get jacked by a bad person.
