Limited slip question

(tried searching but didn't find any answers...)

I've noticed that if I have the wheel turned and accelerate from a stop, there is some sort of noise from the rear end, almost a grinding or clunking. Is this normal for a car with a limited-slip diff? It doesn't happen if I am moving and then start a turn, only if I start a turn from a stopped position.

Thanks!

Yes it's normal. If you think it's noticable on the RX8 take a ride in a 60's vette, it sounds like the pig's about to explode. Then think about it - the vette's 40 years old so it must not be something thats gonna break.

I was thinking it was normal. I had a locking diff on my old truck but not a limited slip. It would clunk occasionally on acceleration out of a turn, but not exactly like this.

Thanks!

i'm glad someone posted this. mine does it whenever i make a sharp right/left turn between 20-35mph. brakes, cuts power...the whole traction control deal. the car isnt anywhere near losing traction so it's always puzzled me. btw, my 8 does it all the time not just after a complete stop.

out of curiosity, why is this normal?

I have been noticing the same situation in mine. Parallel parked yesterday and as I drove away it sounds like the brakes dragging. I was going to call the dealer tommorow and inquire about it. At first I thought maybe the DSC was acting up ,,so I turned it off and it still does it.
My previous RX-8 did not do this ,but it was a base model (without DSC).
It is kind of annoying.

Easy -

Actually, try it from a stop with the traction control off, not just the DSC (hold the DSC button down for 10 seconds or so until the traction light in the dash comes on).

If your sound goes away, then the sound was the traction control, not the limited slip. Traction control utilizing braking to slow down a spinning wheel will probably sound like something grinding, since the brake pulses are rapid and variable. Mine does this when accelerating from loose material (dirt, gravel).

i had what sounds to be a very similar problem.
when accelerating, especially when turning in 1st and reverse, there was a very apparent grinding and shaking from the rear end of my car. it started out fairly mild but continued to grow to be a problem (and an embarrassment).
i ignored it for awhile as some folks suggested it was no big deal. however, when i took it to the dealer, it was decided that some fool (pep boys etc...previous owner) had changed the differential fluid with the wrong type of fluid or wrong weight of fluid. having drained and replaced it properly, the problem has dissappeared, at least for now. i say you get it checked out.

below are the threads i started should they prove useful:

As far as the DSC goes, I actually have a question about that as well. Does the dash light come on every time it works or no? I ask because I have seen it come on sometimes, but there have been other times when I've been pretty sure it is working and no light comes on the dash.

Start reading page 5-21 through 5-24 in the owners manual. :)

when i went in to the dealership (with the above problem) and took the service guy for a short drive, dragging brakes was his initial diagnosis.

Check out my thread at "Issues & Problems" "Rear end Shudder"
I had my diff replaced for this reason.

Easy_E1 07-12-2006 08:49 PM

Reading all this ,it sounds like the dif is going out.
Tried the DSC and TSC off scenario and made no differance.
But here is the kicker,,, I was turning to the left the other day at a reasonable speed out of the corner and heard a loud POP out of the back of the cars right side.
Took it to the dealer that day and they looked all over the rear end and found nothing.
Now I will go back and take the tech for a longer drive.
It is more evident after a trip down the freeway. Gets the rear warm.
I guess I will see what happens.
Oh, the wife said that she can hear it and feel it,,,"so whats wrong with the mechanic?" lol
