Lightning Yellow paint

Did they stop using this paint color because it peels prematurely or because it didn't sell well?
I had a few small chips on the driver front quarter. And a small area of clear coat peeling on the bumper. It rained all day yesterday. I looked at my car today and a large area on the front quarter and bumper have bubbled up. I know it will have to be repainted to solve the issue.
What would you guys do in this situation? I don't really have 3000-5000 right now to blow on a paint job.

I think Mazda likes to use yellow in limited quantities, I believe they did the same thing with the last RX-7 & Miata's. That said I have a Yellow RX-8 and feel it looks ok for a car with 147,000 miles on it.

never heard of paint issues.... Not sure if you would have to repaint the entire car, just repaint the bumper and touch up the rock chips...

Lightning Yellow was always a first year only color. Most of the dealers didn't order for fear that the color would be too polarizing and not sell well. It is much safer to sell red, silver or black cars.

Your problem is not an indemic problem with lightning yellow paint. Mine is fine after 97,000 miles of driving. My guess is that it is failing because either it is a poor repaint that is going bad, or the car was never paste waxed in its life. It also may have been exposed to chemicals that it didn't like.

Sorry for your trouble, but you are right that a repaint is the only way to fix it. Best of luck.

Paintscratch.com has the matching paint, clearcoat, etc.., including the flexibility modified paint for use on the bumpers. If you don't have the cash, read up on DIY painting, practice on some smaller areas and then do the best you can. There are worse things in life than having an RX-8 with non-pro paintjob. Good news is the yellow is a solid color with no sparkly bits, so it's pretty easy to match. I painted my fender vents Lightning Yellow with paint from paintscratch and it's a very good match and has lasted for several years with no problems.

First year color only ...... Too bad its a nice color . Had it been available when I purchased mine I would have gotten one . Go to a few body shop and see what they charge , it might not be that bad .

I have a yellow rx8 too. The paint on my aftermarket spoiler was peeling, but the rest of the car was fine. i just got a spray can from www.touchuppaintonline.com and repainted it couple of months ago and now it looks good again. you might want to think about repainting the peeling area as well before it gets worse.

Yeah we have two locals with lightning yellows and both cars look perfect. Like the guys have said, it was probably a bad repaint from an incident or the paint was damaged by chemicals. one thing i can say about the 8 for sure is that the paint holds up well. My car has 116,000 miles as aside from chips, my paint looks great.

Yes, I am a pic whore.

Thanks for the info guys. It's actually the clear coat peeling off. I hadn't had that much sleep when I typed the first post. my bad. I've got a friend that knows someone that paints cars. He is supposed to be contacting the guy for me. I know I could try to fix it on my own but I don't want to make it look worse than it already does. I'll try and upload a pic later.
