Just saying hi
Hello everyone I'm a new member just saying hi
On my way to pick up my rx8 today I've read loads bout them And decided to purchase one with hot start problems I like a challenge hehe so wish me luck as I'm gonna be removing stripping and rebuilding this engine with the help of my dad a marine engineer. Here's hoping we can make it and get a good car at the end of it So I'm buying a 2004 192 model with leather and sat nav Purchase price is 1200gbp. It's about 200 more than I wanted to go but all the breakers are buying them at the moment. It has covered 102000 miles and it's still driving just hot start problems. So hoping it's just seals that are away. Anyway my excitement is making me rabble lol. So hi everyone hope to chat again soon |
Good luck and welcome to the club. Be sure to search as there is so much information on this site that will help you resolve almost any and all problems that you may encounter ;)

Are you sure that you can pull it off with just a seal replacement?
A rebuild is expensive, a cheap rebuild is even more expensive. |
Well who knows bout the rebuild but I'm not gonna scrimp on it what it needs it what it shall get. Can I pull it off well with my dads ability and mine I'm sure we can do it. After all he does work to very tight tolerances ect and I'm more of a rough mechanic lol so between us I think it could happen if not sell to a breaker for same as I paid for it. I learned a motto a long time ago
If u show me I will see If u tell me I will hear If I do it I will learn |
You're right but expect a 2500£-3000£ bill for parts to do it right :)
|
Ooooft was not expecting that can get an engine fitted for same price lol. R u talking bout changing clutch ect and rotor housings
|
At 100k miles replacing the housings is a smart move. You may not even have enough meat to just lap the sideplates if the marks are too deep.
Rotor bearings, all the seals and gaskets to complete the build :) When you see cheaper prices is just because they don't replace some parts. That's the line between a hack job and a real rebuild though. |

Right well I'm thinking twice now lol. Still if I do all that work it'll be a great car. So the ppl that sell engines are they not doing it right. Or is it just cause it's done so many miles. Lap the side plates I've read a lot but not heard that before
|
Well in gbp I think it's about 1000 pounds is about 1560 dollars.

That's because most owners won't shed the money to get the job done absolutely right. The car is only worth that much! Hadlowj is an user that did several good rebuilds cum grano salis, pm him for he may have some good used spares to bring the cost sensibly down. |
That would be minted. The chance of me doing 50k miles in the car is mental as usually I only keep a car for about 6 months. I really wanted a 230bhp one with 6 speed box but this is what's came up so I'll see what I think of it and if I like it and it feels nice maybe get a bigger one who knows
|
Congrats on your 8! :) I have had mine a total of, oh, 2 days - and I'm already in love.

1200gbp = $1915 (cost of the car) 2750£ = $4388 (est cost of the engine repair) Total = $6303 George, another thing to consider... With that many miles, the engine surely isn't the only repairs that will be needed. |
Well here's the update lol was a nightmare so the car started after 3 attempts smoke belting out the exhaust lol so I started driving and it was rough to say the least if I let the revs drop it was close to cut out and then it happened it Did lol. So had to push it off a roundabout in rush hour not fun. Anyway parked it up and went for a mcdonalds then came back and bump started it and it started fine so was driving it again keeping revs up and using handbrake for soft braking (was in rush hour remember) so I could keep the revs up then.......... It kinda died or was trying to die so I floored it and it took a few seconds it reved it's balls of and started idling fine and drove with plenty power got me back a good 60 miles the one thing I would say is when I was flooring it the eml was blinking and when I was cruising it just stayed on. I'm thinking I'm gonna do a new starter battery plugs and coils if I'm rebuilding they will need it anyway so I'll try it first and see if any different it does sound lazy on the starter.... So wish me luck oh and I do love the driving position it's nice to drive!!!!! When it starts lol

Welcome to 8Club...

Yeah defo m8 hope I keep this one and don't get rid of it as I get bored easy. Hopefully this baby will keep my attention
|
Is it possible that his 8 was simply flooded? He did mention it "ran fine" after a high revving ...
|
Good luck. Just keep track of the parts when they fall out of the engine during disassembly.
