just rented a viper in vegas

hey guys...first post here. have owned an 04 8 mt fo almost a year. Been averaging about 180-220 miles per tank.....usually lower then higher. I rented a new 05 viper in vegas over the weekend and I am seriously pissed. i managed to drive this car faster then all heck and manage 2mpg more then my 8. This is a v10 8.3 liter ....more then twice the hp and 3 times the torque. This is sickening to me.

djseto 10-16-2005 09:56 PM

i just got 19.2 mpg with mixed highway/city driving. I got 12K miles on it now....

RotoRocket 10-16-2005 10:03 PM

I just bought an '05 new, and with the first 3 tanks, I have averaged 289 miles (305 miles on one tank).

Have you gotten all of the engine flashes?

RotoRocket 10-16-2005 10:03 PM

By the way, how did you like the Viper?

krangorx8 10-16-2005 10:11 PM

You could spend over 80 years driving and still not spend more on extra gas and Rx-8 than buying a brand new Viper. I dont see what your pissed about.

Mugatu 10-16-2005 10:19 PM

i guess this thread is another 'RX8 mileage sucks' thread? ;)

Ike 10-16-2005 11:50 PM

I blame Canada!

DARKMAZ8 10-16-2005 11:54 PM

I blame opec!

Fanman 10-17-2005 12:18 AM

He's obviously pissed about the fact that according to him, an 8.3 liter engine can get better mileage than his 1.3 liter (or 2.6 or 3.9...whichever one you want to consider). Not sure why you're trying to read between the lines and come up with excuses. It's not about the cost of the other car...it's about the engine size/power/performance vs. fuel consumption.

Anyway I think you should read rotarygod's wisdom here for a better understanding of why your mileage sucks:

http://www.myrotarycar.com/mazda-rx8...splacement.asp

But if you're not making 200 miles on a full tank even with granny shifting and what not, then you have bigger problems with the car's fuel INefficiency than most of us do.

By the way...the Viper holds 18.5 gallons, rx8nomph, so just because you managed over 240 miles out of the Viper's tank doesn't mean you necessarily got better mileage with the Viper. I hope you divided by the right figure when you calculated the Viper's mpg. Also, I really hope you drove it from full to empty and aren't giving us some half-a-tank bs.

I can see his point and he is correct. Look at a big piston engine such as a Viper engine or even an LS1. They are very powerful engines that can still get decent mileage. Especially considering their size. Alot of piston engines can get really good mileage. That is just one of the unfortunate downsides to a rotary. Especially one that needs to meet emissions standards. There are ways to get more mileage out of them but it will never be directly on par size for size against many piston counterparts. There are many reasons for this and unfortunately most can't be solved. As rotary development continues, efficiency will slowly rise. Of coure piston technology is really moving ahead too and there are some very exciting piston engine technologies in the works. I'm not really sure what to tell a person who is mad about the rotary gas mileage other than that's one thing you'll have to live with if you want to own a rotary. I wish mileage was higher on them too but my love for that little engine just outweighs the downsides. That and the Civic I have as a daily driver! ;)

Didn't know I was on that site! Cool with me. I wonder how many people have read that and disagreed with it? With that topic it always seems to happen.

I didn't know either. I Googled "rotary 1.3 2.6" (without quotations) and that was the first thing that came up.

The transmission and rear end ratios have a lot to do with it. The Corvette engine does not have to work very hard to go fast. At 85 mph, my C6 engine is turning 2000 rpm. Today, at 80 mph, my "instantaneous mpg" was 25 mpg. My 4-speed AT will do 106 mph in second gear. My RX-8 4-speed AT would do around 70 mph in second gear. It's all in the gearing.

Chrisbert 10-17-2005 05:53 AM

When are you trading the RX8 for the Viper?

Vipers average 8-10 mpg and handle scary over 105mph. I don't understand your thread. Gas mileage is'nt as important as having a car you can enjoy for years with low maintenance. The RX8 is that car. It'll save you money if you hang onto it for 10 years.

If we had more torque in the 8...we could change the gearing...and save more gas, it's just that simple.

MTLbroker 10-17-2005 01:27 PM

If you have to complain about fuel economy, then you can't afford the car. It's the cost of ownership.

It's like when I go out with a hot girlfriend. I can't bring her to MacD.

I have to meet her for drinks, then supper, and maybe a club afterwards. Then I have to decide if I can afford her or not.

You could always trade her in for a cheaper model. :)
May not be as flashy, but would be good for daily use. Wait, we're not talking about cars anymore are we?
