well im not sure TOO much i havent put any mods on or really reasearched, but i know they updated the ecu chip that gave a better idle and a little better gas mileage...at least thats what they did with my 8, i would never go into another car......especially a prius lol, if your going for gas mileage, the prius otherwise go with the 8 i have an 04 and no problems so far(except one that i cant figure out) but its getting serviced i personally dont know about the l&m flash
oh and i still have the engine warranty on mine thats good for 7 years 100k not sure bout an 05 or newer

IMO, if you don't really need 4 seater but still wants a good driving feel and exciting car, try to get a Honda S2000 because (IMO again), there aren't any worthwhile mods that would increase the mpg. Even if there is, it would take a few years to break even; cost of mods vs those money going to pay extra gas.

'05 has a 4 year, 50k mile bumper to bumper warranty, 5 year 60k drivetrain, and 8 year 100k engine. Goes with the car, you don't have to do anything to transfer it. Unless an '05 was sitting unsold for a year or two, the B-B is over by now.

The most recent ecu flash is MSP16. It's free, and if you bring your car to a Mazda dealer for any work they're supposed to do it. Mazda keeps track of all service that's been done at Mazda dealers. Any dealer can look that up for you.

Really nothing to do to improve gas mileage. If that's a concern, this isn't the right car for you. I'm old enough to remember when 17 mpg was considered to be really good, so I have no problem.

If two seats will be enough and you want good mileage and reliability, consider a Miata.

Ken
