Just got a new RX-8!!

Just last weekend went looking for a Mazda Miata and ended up getting a brand new Pearl white 6spd RX-8 instead. So far extremely happy with it but this break in period sucks. I wanna drive the car as it was ment to be driven. Just a quick question for all you veterans on the forum. The guy at the dealership told me that after 500 miles its ok to beat the living hell out of the car and not to worry too much and that driving it like a grandma isn't too good for the car. Is this true?

Most people wait 1000 miles before they start to push it. But the dealer is right, redlining the engine often is good for it. Driving it like a grandma can cause carbon build up.

From Racing Beat:

We receive many requests for our recommended break-in procedures. The following are Racing Beat's recommendations:
- For the first 1000 miles do not accelerate under full throttle.
- During the first 1000 miles do not exceed 4000 RPM.
- For miles 1000-2000, expand the RPM upwards
- but do not accelerate at full throttle.
- Over 2000 miles, full throttle and high RPM is acceptable.
After break-in the general consensus is that it's better for the engine to keep the revs high and varied instead of crawling around at 2000rpm trying to spare some fuel.

When you first start the car let it warm up till the idle drops to 1500 RPMs, then keep it below 4000 RPMs till 5 minutes after the water temp reaches full operating temp.

If you don't occasionally rev high, you will experience what is referred to as carbon lock... not a good thing.

Congrats on the car and welcome to the forum.
Follow the break-in procedure. Then rev the crap out of it.

I think its okay to rev the engine up high (not redline yet) but 6-7K during your break in period, that way the engine gets to know its range.....besides most people who test drive cars beat the snot of it initally as well. Just don't beat the pissed out of it light after light when you're in the break in period.

But definitely the salesman is actually right, dont baby it, after your break in period, seriously drive it.

Of course, if you really want to, you can ring up those first 500 (or even 2,000) miles in a couple of days or so. Just take a long trip—preferrably on back roads—keep an eye on the odometer, and vary engine speed often. Perfect opportunity to show off your new wheels to a friend a state or two away!

"Put it on a track, and you quickly realize what this car's all about. About this engine: it is different, it is a Rotary so you use it differently. All the power's in the top end, so you can rash it mercilessly, and it'll thank you for it." - Richard Hammond

Congrats on your purchase! Let the addiction begin.

#1. Remove dealer frames. Do it now as others have said.

#2. Consider 3M clear plastic to protect the hood and front from chips. Mazda paint is like eggshells.

After that it is up to you.

Thanks for the pics! Looks great--I like White Pearl.
