Just changed my cabin air filter... now I'm about to vomit

So, I bought my car used with 40k on the odo, and it looked to have been meticulously maintained. Apparently the guy didn't worry about the cabin air filter, or the mice living in the compartment.

:puke:
By far the most disgusting air filter change I have ever done on anything.

I do have a question though - is the grating above the filter supposed to be open?
If so, why? Wouldn't that allow pollutants and what not escape through there, rather than being filtered?

Nice find!

laythor 05-09-2010 11:17 PM

the top part is for when you put your AC on recirculate. It will draw air in from the cabin instead of the outside. One way of keeping things from nesting in there is to put the air on recirc before turning the car off if it's going to sit for a day or two.

JantzenRX-8 05-09-2010 11:23 PM

OMG! i bought my car at 20k checked the filter at 40k and it looked like new.

THAT is insane

Twiztog43 05-10-2010 01:58 AM

nasty!

i should really replace mine..... i have a strange odor when i turn up the ac

HomicidalApple 05-10-2010 02:04 AM

ewwwww thats fuckin gross! i bought my car with 74k... maybe i should check mine

i dont have any funky smells like you do twiz. i think its about time you swap that out

Twiztog43 05-10-2010 02:46 AM

yea i should, just too many things i need for the car

-cabin filter
-K&N Intake filter
-coils/wires/plugs
-shocks

Gr8Bullet 05-10-2010 03:29 AM

lol that gross.....

Chad D. 05-10-2010 04:53 AM

hahahahaha....That's Nasty!

Cylestyne 05-10-2010 05:44 AM

Looks can be deceiving, I bought my 8 from a friend who took care of it meticulously. Throughout when he owned it -- he complained that the A/C simply sucked. When I bought it, I had the cabin filter cleaned, though it was clogged but it was not NASTY like that. Viola, A/C fixed.

But seriously, what you've posted is nasty! Yuck.

jasonrxeight 05-10-2010 09:16 AM

one thing when you use AC is to run fan after you turn off AC not just turn off the car.
water in the system it gets a bit nasty smell.

Huey52 05-10-2010 09:42 AM

I now put a sonic rodent deterrent under my hood during Winter storage as they do love that nesting spot!

Socr8tes 05-10-2010 11:11 AM

At least you're not alone. A bunch of us have had problems with mice one way or another. In addition to nesting material, I had mouse PARTS on my cabin filter as well. I don't know what it is about our cars that makes it so inviting... I never had this happen before. I tried mothballs (bad idea), sheet metal barriers, sonic repellants, and traps - the only way I got it to stop was by moving another car out of the garage and the RX-8 in. The good news is the engine compartment liner is niether especially difficult or expensive to replace.

Huey52 05-10-2010 11:15 AM

As well as my '8, it also happened to my daughter's Mazda6 in Winter (she didn't drive it for a few weeks in heavy snow cover). So.... mice must also recognize the Mazda bang for the buck. But then, we're just part of their experiment anyway (Hitchiker's Guide ...). ;)

Roidz 05-10-2010 12:33 PM

That is sick. Guess I should check mine. Hope I don't find any surprises like you did, lol.

dozer 05-10-2010 01:00 PM

wtf!

ATL-GP 05-10-2010 01:00 PM

OK, am I the only one that thought Kosoku found SOMETHING ELSE in his cabin air filter...ummm, looks like "Pineapple Express" or something like that

Galen Darkmoon 05-10-2010 01:52 PM

After those mice worked so hard to add all that free filtration material in there for ye.

nycgps 05-10-2010 02:18 PM

I change my cabin filter every 10-15 K miles depending on my mood.

everytime I change it, I find lots of dirt and tree leaves on it.

I dont want no little friend to build a nest in there ... so I change it to circ every time I shut my car off (almost every time)

jasonrxeight 05-10-2010 05:37 PM

how did mice get in there anyway?

wro87 05-10-2010 05:59 PM

My daughters 8' had 46k on it when bought we checked the air filter and the inlet box was full of acorn shells then when we figured out how to get to the cabin filter it had them too ( but no mice $@#%$%) thank goodness. Ac does work better now! Mice can find a way when you least expect it!!:dunno:
wro87

rodjonathan 05-10-2010 09:44 PM

dam thats nasty i need to lookup how to do that and change mine too

robsrx82004 05-11-2010 04:30 PM

That is Crazy. I should check just in case......

Jedi54 05-11-2010 04:36 PM

:puke:

Atilla 05-11-2010 04:49 PM

yeah i kinda threw up in my mouth a little bit...

mkmike103 05-11-2010 04:49 PM

Scared to check mine now.

Gr8Bullet 05-11-2010 04:52 PM

i hardly use my ac and its pretty much on recirulate all the time.

If it's on recirculate, you are using the AC all the time. The only time the AC compressor isn't being used is when it is set to outside air and dash vents only. In the other conditions the AC is on (hot or cold) to remove moisture from the cabin.

Gr8Bullet 05-11-2010 05:04 PM

well i hardly turn on my ac so i should be good lol. my ac still works fine non the less

Bullitt 05-12-2010 12:18 PM

I pulled half a morning edition outta mine. No creatures, tho.

Huey52 05-12-2010 12:25 PM

I can turn my '05 to recirc w/o engaging the AC, but it's pretty stiffling after awhile to be on recirc. Recirc is principally to preclude dust for a short duration only or when very hot to AC-cool the cabin more quickly, again just short duration. We need fresh air as much/more than our engines do! ;)

altspace 05-14-2010 05:57 AM

I've seen worse, as in dead animals. Not in my cars though. Looks like they simply took the engine compartment padding material and made a nest in there. Very common really.

Checked mine yesterday. Covered in leaves, those helicopter things, dust, debris, dirt, you name it. It was really nasty. I hit them against the driveway and dislodged most of the crap, will call the parts store tomorrow to verify price and availability for new filters. 53k on my car, probably never changed for the 6 years its been on the road. Yuck

Beefy98 09-02-2010 06:35 PM

I drive my cars every day. And yet that still doesn't stop the mice from burrowing in and eating thru the cabin filter, the air filter, storing nuts in airboxes, and, my favorite, eating thru a fuel tank sending wire tripping a CEL! That cost me 150 clams.

mike[piston eater] 09-02-2010 06:40 PM

ewwww

are you sure about that?
my AC is on when I turn it on.

YUL PHL 09-03-2010 09:12 PM

looks like the previous owner was stashing his weed there

Renesis07 09-06-2010 12:29 PM

I....dont.....even.....want......to.......look.... at......mine.....

7 year old car / 84K miles.... Never been checked, This is going to suck...

alz0rz 09-06-2010 12:34 PM

I found squirrel droppings in mine when I checked mine yesterday. Alot of it.

This comes after I found 3 dead baby squirrels in my battery tray back in Winter when they tore out my firewall lining and chewed through some wire harnesses and grounds.

DocBeech 09-07-2010 12:30 AM

lmao you should have kept them as pets...

Fortunate Few 09-16-2010 06:19 PM

i just replaced mine like 10 mintues ago. im not gonna post the pics because its way worse than the dude that made this threads. but there were snails and rat doodoo

Pinky1963 09-16-2010 10:16 PM

I agree with ATL-GP. I thought it was something else:ylsuper:

RotaryP7 09-16-2010 11:15 PM

Damn.. How do you guys get these creatures onto your cars? Curious where some people live..

DocBeech 09-17-2010 12:20 AM

You don't have to live anywhere special. I knew someone that had a cat get caught in the car, he smelled something "funny" when he got to work. BBQ kitty in engine compartment.
