Just 1 Question

So I just bought my 8 about 3 weeks ago and whenever I'm starting up the car it seems that it takes longer then usual to start up. It kinda seems like it has a low battery but after it starts, it's perfectly fine. Is that normal?

DarkLord7854 11-12-2008 06:49 PM

As in, it turns over a few times before catching?

Sometimes mine does that if it's a bit colder than usual in the morning

Phi 11-12-2008 06:53 PM

how cold is it outside? my car only does it when i warm it up in the morning its likes 40 degrees out.

crod189 11-12-2008 06:54 PM

yea it turns for at least 3-5 seconds. It usually does take longer in the mornings but it still does it during the afternoon when the car is already warmed up.

what year is your 8 and miles?

crod189 11-12-2008 06:58 PM

Its on 04 with close to 35k miles.

How old is your battery? Have you had the upgraded battery and starter put in(there was a "TSB")? You might want to check the water level in your battery, even tho they say no maintenance it might be down to the top of the plates. Have you changed your plugs yet? 35k is when it is due...

crod189 11-12-2008 07:08 PM

I really dont know how old my batter is but I'll check the water level when I get home and I have not put in the upgraded battery.

04RX8man 11-12-2008 07:45 PM

yeah mine does that everyonce and a while too I would check the battery also...if it's still the original prob close to a new one soon Mine is an 04 and i'm about ready to replace it just so it does not leave me stranded somewhere

crod189 11-12-2008 07:49 PM

Okay! Thanks, appreciate the help.

SideOfBacon 11-12-2008 07:50 PM

sounds like battery may be going bad.. could also be gunked/dirty plugs and its taking a bit to fire.

Razz1 11-12-2008 08:39 PM

they have slow starters if its an 04

greg985 11-12-2008 11:11 PM

just got my battery relpaced about a week ago with the same symptoms

alz0rz 11-13-2008 12:30 AM

i changed my coils a while back for the same symptoms.. along with random misfires..

my car would take 3-4 seconds to start up regardless if it was warm or cold out.. now it fires up within 1 second.

surprised noone else said it.. especially for an 04 with that many miles.. replace your plugs, coils, and wires anyway.

crod189 11-13-2008 05:07 PM

ok well yea i guess i'll do that. Everyone seems to say its my battery. But wouldnt a light come on if it was my batter? like telling me it was low or something?

RX8Sinner 11-13-2008 05:24 PM

Not always, and the nice thing about manual cars, if your battery does die, just push it and pop the clutch to start it.

But if its an 04, why not just do the basic replacements on it that most people seem to do? Coils, Plugs, Wires, battery.... Just do everything at once save yourself the hassle later on.

Then again I should do as I preach I have an 04 with 40k and i should probably do the same, i'm just lazy and broke.

crod189 11-13-2008 09:47 PM

haha yea im pretty much broke after buying this car too. Fuckin goin to school and working part time is hard work! Especially next year when i go to college haha.

I guess i'll start with the coils, plugs, wires, and battery once i get the chance too!

Make sure you have the updated battery and starter. More than likely the issue. When it gets cold, it takes maybe 1-1.5 seconds of cranking to fire up instead of right away when it's warmer out. I'd assume you have to check on bat/starter.
