It's been almost a year.

I've almost had my car for a year now. It never really ceases to amaze me. Just recently I really found out how to have fun with the car. LEGALLY. No speeding. Just going down the twisty roads with a decent (45-50mph) speed limit. I've noticed myself not listening to my music at night while driving because I love listening to the engine with the MS intake. I've also noticed I start to feel bad for not redlining it once a day. Is that weird? All in all, I love this car, and definitely plan to keep it for a long time.

NgoRX8 12-22-2006 12:38 AM

haha...just recently you found that out? you've been babying it.

Phantom Menace 12-22-2006 01:32 AM

Owning an 8 is a lot like pimping a whore...

You gotta push her and beat her every now and then to remind yourself of her true potential.

4444 12-22-2006 07:55 AM

I recently started to rev mine really high and redline once in a while....I am still trying to get used to it because my mind tells me shift but the RPMs are still flying. Also this is a rear wheel drive car and even in the rain I have yet to loose traction. In my RSX s I would loose traction instantly and the car would always spin in the rain. The RX8 is so fun to drive.

PS. Is it bad to take it past the 9k redline to lets say 9300rpm's? I have never done that but It doesnt seem like there is a gas cutoff.

VRZOOMZOOM 12-22-2006 09:46 AM

I dont think its bad to rev past 9000....there is a fuel cut off...to prevent damage....i find myself at tiems revving past 9K accidentally cause i'm hustling. haha.

But yeah these cars are meant to be revved, so don't hold it back, i actually get frustrated when i'm stuck in town traffic and can't get past 4K, nowhere to go......the fun begins at 7K for me all way to redline haha. I love listening to the beep.....

I think the car pretty much suprises people cause it keeps going and going in terms of the RPM range. you still have 3K left to rev before shifting into your next gear in most cases while other cars have a 6K redline.

9291150 12-22-2006 10:35 AM

Revs to 9500rpm indicated, though someone here said thats only 9300 for real. Can't see how it hurts anything but your fuel economy. But I betcha it'll improve your times, if you're into that sort of thing.

16 months for me, and while I had some reliability concerns, I still love driving it.

RazzyBRX-8 12-22-2006 01:06 PM

Oh no, I'm definitely not babying her. My girlfriend says she hates when I drive like I do because it makes her feel sick. Haha. I just didn't realize how much you could really push it around turns without the tires breaking traction is the slightest bit.

When I'm in traffic...I'll rev it, in neutral, til it kisses redline just to hear the beep!

What kind of reliability concerns do you have? Honestly I am sorta afraid to push it hard because A) its a rotary engine and people keep saying the Apex seals break on them B) Its not a Honda and after owning those cars i know that you can beat the hell out of them and nothing happens!!!

the way i see it, if it has a 9K redline, and its built to go that high RPM, then why not push it hard....it would be one thing if it it had a 6K redline and u revved it pass there......i dont understand if it has a rotary and meant to go 8500-9K redline.....then it should be handle the push.....hell doesn't peak HP come in at 8500 RPM and peak torque comes in at 5500 RPM?? :Freak_ani :)

06RX8 12-22-2006 04:25 PM

Oh yea i totally see what your saying, im just not 100% sure

RazzyBRX-8 12-22-2006 04:30 PM

Didn't Hymee or someone have it tested to higher than 10,000? Maybe I misread that somewhere or maybe I'm making it up. I could swear someone did though.

haha, if you had an aftermarket exhaust and doing that, cop would bust you right then.

i like to rev it to like 4k sometimes while in neutral w/ traffic. any higher and people will think im a wannabe racer or something.

A) My FC had 200k on the first engine, and the only reason it was replaced was because a ex girlfriend poured sugar in the tank and screwed the fuel pump and the engine, and that engine was run hard always.
B)F@#K Honda , just as many of them in ratio mess up as rotaries, and a lot of the rotary cars issues of reliability can be traced DIRECTLY back to the driver.

Why, are cops in SD dicks? I don't have exhaust but it does get pretty loud as it is. I don't really care if people think I'm "revving" on them to race...I mean, were in traffic! Where could we go? Cops here, in SF, don't really sweat that kind of stuff. And, of course I don't do it near a cop in traffic! Just so not to tempt them at the end of the month. ;)

Also, if people should look at me strange for revving I always make a look like I didn't mean to do it--you know, like when you honk your horn with your elbow or something by accident. :dunno:

Come on, you cant say that. The S2000 revs high and my buddy had two different ones that were perfect and could be redlined non stop. You cant do that with the RX8. If you were to redline it everyday and drive it hard, the Apex seals would wear out so fast that you wouldnt know what to do. Also it will eat so much oil that it will be hard to keep up. I still love the RX8, but its no honda

Sorry but bull$hit.

I've been an S2000 owner for over a year and my car takes up more oil then my friend's RX-8 and he drives the $hit out of his everyday.

My friend RX-8 also gets better MPG, eats less oil and can be reved just as safely as my S2000 every single day.

Utter and complete bullshit. Hopefully no prospective RX8 buyers will read into what you just said.

And it looks like it's a rotary noob fest on the first page as well.

The rotary is meant to be revved high, that's what it wants, it's so free-revving. The engine would be fine even if it had a redline at 12k, but the limiter is set to 9500 or whatever because power drops off past that, and peak torque comes at 7500ish. Revving that high doesn't damage anything, except maybe some slight stress on the transmission and obviously the tires.

I redline mine at least a few times every drive, no problems, don't expect to because n/a rotaries last long, as proven by n/a RX-7s with 200k+ miles. And since Mazda has aimed for reliability with the Renesis, a rotary which is way more modern than the RX-7 engines, I think I'll keep redlining every day (unless I go FI). I add a quart of oil every 1500-2000 miles, which is hardly anything to worry about.

Totally agree.

RazzyBRX-8 12-23-2006 05:04 PM

I love redlining the car. Especially with the MS CAI. I get a lot of looks because that thing gets so loud in the upper RPMs. It's MUSIC. I just really like the car, and I don't think I'll get sick of it.

exactly what he said... i drive the shit out my 8 and she seems to love it... and about the oil, i fill up maybe every 3 weeks and she is fine... I have driven alot of "sports cars" and like i tell everybody, if you are a driver, YOU WILL LOVE THE RX8
