Insurance???

Anybody heard of the insurance companies have the RX-8 in their systems to get quotes?? Or does any one know how soon before we get the cars delivered in June we will know how it will be final classified by them to be able to get quotes.

So yeah I'm under 25 and insurance cost is a factor to me  althought it won't stop me from buying it, just doing my homework.

I'm under 25 and live in NEW JERSEY! EEEEEP!

However if worse comes to worse, I'll keep the Millenia under my name and put the RX-8 under my mom's name... however that would also involve her buying the car in her name.

We will see as time goes on. I expect to be issued a VIN before I recieve the car so that my homework and insurance can be settled on before the car hits the dealership, and that I'm all ready-and-set to go. I also want to make sure that Mazda is being attentive in listening to us in regards to this, especially in finding the residual values on the car, as I'm going to be leasing. At such a low price, I'd imagine resale will be pretty decent and my lease price should not go over $420 a month. I compared it to the G35 coupe and that runs ~$400 a month with $2000 down and a 33k MSRP. The RX-8 should be similar.

Hopefully the four doors and four seats will help out with the insurance costs.:)

Good and bad....

My sister works for a major, national insurance company. She ran the RX-8 through with my driving record (I think I only have 1 minor speeding ticket left on there...) and the price was astronomical. I think it was $4000 for 6 months or some crap. That sounded really high to me. She said that the insurance companies are rating it as a "class M" vehicle, and a 3 on a scale of 1-4 for high performance cars, 4 being the highest. Anyway, I'm babbling.

The next day I submitted a quote request to the insurance company via their website and they had to rate it by hand, but they sent me back a premium of $678.80 for the RX-8 and my POS Ford Explorer for the same 6 month term, so that's not too bad. A little over $100/month for the RX-8 alone I would guess...

Hercules, what is the deal with Jersey anyway? My parents are going to be moving just outside Philadelphia on the Jersey side, and after meeting with the realtor, talking over costs such as taxes and insurance and such she said that there are only 2-3 companies that will even WRITE car insurance in New Jersey. She had no idea why that was, and she said many people suspect some kind of corruption within the system or something.

So, do you know what is up with insurance in New Jersey? Maybe I can pass it along to them.

tallguylehigh 01-20-2003 09:38 AM

Hey Jerome-

I also live in New Jersey, worse still, I just recently moved to NJ. My first word of advice is if you are living right by Philly, live on the PA side- lower taxes, insurance, etc. Now as for Jersey insurance- New Jersey is the auto fraud capital of the world. Our drivers are stupid and do not take care of their cars, so if someone taps them they then continue to replace everything that was broken on the car. As for fraud, no. It is just that auto insurance companies cannot afford to be in NJ. The benefits are too few and the vices are too many. The End.

It didn't have any real information. I entered the model manually (as opposed to selecting it from a drop-down box). That's why the quote was so rediculous, because their site wasn't set up to rate the RX-8 yet....

Unless the laws are different in NJ and from what Tallguylehigh said they probably are but here in AZ the vehicle does not have to be titled to you or the lien in your name to be able to insure it. If it's not legal than its not enforced very well because I have been doing it for a while.

RotorMotor 01-20-2003 03:19 PM

It actually is illegal. You cannot insure a car that you do not own. It's not technically "enforced" but it would become an MAJOR issue if the car was wrecked or stolen and, unless there was some strange technicality, you would probably not be covered for the claim.
