Inexpensive gas
 

I searched and could not find a general post mentioning..

Costco / Sam's Club premium gas is usually the price of regular at other gas stations. Maybe its common knowledge, but if not, the price of membership will pay for itself in no time!

I use both of these sources and have not had any problems at all. My mileage since taking my 8 out of storage in March has averaged 18.2 My average mileage since I got it in August 2003 is 17.5!

yeah, unlike other cheap off-brand gas stations, costco and sams club don't buy crappy gas and sell it for cheap, they buy good stuff and sell it for cheap. Cheapo gas stations buy shit and sell it to you cheap, stay away from those.

Yeah. I get better mileage with Costco gas than I do with 76!

How do you know Costco/Sams does not sell "cheap" gas?

I believe some investigative report was done awhile ago showing cheap imitation gas stations buying bottom-of-the-barrel gas and selling it (which is why it was cheaper).

Yea, when possible, I try to fill up at big-name stations. I've used Costco/Sam gas a few times--never noticed any difference though.

I read it in time magazine the other day I think, some big magazine though...

I did some googling and found two bits of info:

1) Costco gas contains no fuel additives.

2) Costco their gas from manufactures like BP-Amoco, Shell, Citgo and so on. It doesn't matter who. The retailers, Costco, etc... just buy it based on who sells it for the cheaper price. So one week you might be pumping at Costco and get Amoco or the next week get Shell gas. It doesn't matter. It's the same wherever you go.


Keep in mind this info is from random people on some forums ... so I can't say if it's true or not.

You probably spend more gas going out of your way than you saving.

If it has additives it will be poste don the pump.

Not entirely true. Chevron has their own fully devoted gas (pipeline?) that is theirs, not any other brand. I was told they are the only company that does this. My step-uncle drives their tanker trucks. I can't remember the full specific details of what he was saying since I wasn't really paying that close of attention to the conversation at that time. :dunno:

I don't know anything about Costco gas since the Costco near me doesn't sell gas, although I believe one about 40 miles from me does. I'm not about to drive over there and try it, though, since it is completely and totally the opposite direction I have to go for work and everything else and I am pretty sure an article I read about said it only had regular and middle grade, no premium, which is all I put in Bella. She seems to be really sensitive to gas changes. I used a different brand (Shell) from normal (Chevron) and my mileage dropped to barely 21 whereas I usually get in the low to mid 23s. My driving was the same, too.

The price at the pump is directly related to the amount of detergent additives present per gallon. Cheaper gas has less detergents. Rotary engines need gas with more detergents to keep the carbon down.

Hate the price but in my cars Chevron or Shell seem to have the best added chemicals, Mobil/ Texaco next, then 76, followed by Arco (best price, usually) Valero (good price), Rotten Robbie, everything else, and dead last BP. Found even 1/4 tank aprx $10 worth of the first, helps even the last run better.
