Improving gas mileage in traffic?

Guys,

Any tips on how I can get better gas mileage with a MT 07 Sport when driving in traffic? This weekend I basically spent 160 miles going from North Jersey to Midtown Manhattan to Upstate NY to Midtown Manhattan to Brooklyn to North Jersey. I used up a whole tank of gas for these 160 miles, which works out to a little over 12mpg. That hurts.

A good chunk of this was driving in traffic though, which on some level accounts for the abysmal mpg, but it still hurts. Any suggestions on improving mpg are appreciated. :D

get the accessport and install a map that leans out your cruising afrs.

I believe I just made 2 mpg more because of it.

people also report better mpg when premixing. But that costs $$ for each time you premix and might well invalidate any mpg gains you get while the ap is a fixed cost.

Obviously, if traffic's real heavy and moving slow, you can shift early, around 3K rpm, below where you normally would shift.

Also, sometimes when I come to a light that just turned red - and it's clear it'll be a long light (many lanes, arrows, etc.) - I'll just turn off the engine for the 60-90 seconds I'll be sitting there. I'll also do this in a traffic jam when traffic just stops altogether and you sit there for a few minutes before you get to move 5 feet, only to sit for a couple of minutes again.

Don't red light race...try to constantly keep your vehicle moving. At a red light, there's no need to floor it so you can get to the next red light faster.

Don't accelarate hard and avoid using the brakes if possible (ie coast in gear and let the car slow down without the use of brakes). Saves gas and brake pads :-P

don't drive in rush hours, if its one of those long ass lights shut off the engine... don't drive in rush hour, hard to get good mileage doing stop and go, even civics will get crazy low mileage.

Invest in a Navigation with Real time Traffic Updates, which can detour you away from traffic if necessary.

Get a Honda

I rev my engine to 9,000 at all the people next to me. revving the engine increases the engine heat, which prompts the fans to kick on, which COOLS the car, which then wastes less gas.

I figure, if you're in a traffic jam, turn the car off, and push it when you move 5-10 feet. :P

Refer to this thread https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/towing-8-car-carrier-penske-141841/, it is one option to tow your car... sorry jk

Not too much you can do, I do know that most timed traffic lights are so that if you drive 2-3 under, that you will make all greens. It works in my town at least...

0 MPH = 0 MPG. Nothing you can do about that. I live in Atlanta and know what its like to be parked on the highway watching the gas needle tick down while not moving. Crawling in traffic is brutal on gas mileage.

Don't accelerate hard.

CarAndDriver 04-02-2008 09:44 PM

No a/c, no windows open, no accelerating and get a 2nd commuter car. I got a cheap 10 year old used Japanese compact and now I get 30MPG to and from work.
