Importance of running in an engine

This may sound like a stupid question, but how important is it to run an engine in? I recently got an RX8, and have at times taken it up to the red but the car has only done 450 miles. What are the implications of thrashing the engine a few times so early on? Can some1 help me as im getting a bit paranoid?????

Shouldn't be an issue. Even Mazda only recommends avoiding sustained high rpm operation. They say nothing about the occasional redline. Just keep the revs down when the engine is cold.

Well i think you're suppose to vary the engine speed for the first 600 miles too I believe.

the whole point of 'breaking in' and engine is that even though the parts of the engine that contact each other are machined to fit perfectly, there are little microscopic rough spots on the parts, as the engine moves, these spots have more friction than the rest of the motor, making hot spots, these super heated areas of the motor can cause problems in the metal. not to mention more wear in those areas.

Drive it how you want, its your car....there are lots of people that drive a brand new car all out. and it runs just as good as the guy that babies it.....do what you want.
