If my car door comes back and hits me one more time...

OMG! I am taking years off my life everytime I get out of my car just by the rage I get in when the door slams in to my leg!! The resistance bar that is suppose to hold the door open... SUCKS! I did a search on this and couldn't find this specific problem so I thought I would see if anyone else is having this issue.

Basicly I can be on flat ground, push the door open to get out and it just bounces back with no resistance and hits my leg or head or where ever I just happen to be at the time.

Any suggestions on making the door stay open with more resistance or am I going to have to just stay in my 8 all the time?

Other than that, no other major issues.

Feras 06-30-2004 01:46 PM

looks like you'll have to stay in your 8 all the time...its not so bad

...jk i had this same problem, you'll learn the correct pressure when openning the door just will take a bit of time, and it'll stick between the two notches.

adrian-1 06-30-2004 01:49 PM

I noticed this too. You've got too slowly push it out and hold it for alittle while if you want it to stay.

Elara 06-30-2004 01:50 PM

I've learned to wait a second and let it bounce off the bottom of my shoe after I open it. I try to take it as a compliment- the car just wants me to go drive some more.

This is funny--I was just thinking about this when my door started to close again when I came back to work from lunch. I just don't pay it any attention.

JOHNRX8 06-30-2004 01:53 PM

I to have had this problem, but I'm starting to hold the door open longer and making sure it will stay. But it is bothersome.

Labop 06-30-2004 01:55 PM

Yeah, it's saying "get back in, drive more..., drive faster." and if you don't listen it hits you harder in the shins. The first couple of times I thought it was the wind. It's nothing major, but I hope mazda fixed this for the '05 model.

It is a pain in the, uhm, leg.

maybe u just don't know ur own strength?

Mikelikes2drive 06-30-2004 01:56 PM

yup its a pain, but just take the pain and get out of the car.... i usually grunt while getting out of the car trying to dodge the door. its a fun game. its like a spanking for being a bad boy and speeding all the time

guy321 06-30-2004 02:00 PM

I've never had this happen.. do ya'll swing yoru door out? I never let up control over the door.

Meowloud 06-30-2004 02:24 PM

Personally, I like it. I don't have to touch the door when I hop in. I just bounce in and the door is closing just behind me. Looks automatic at times!! :D

Ajax 06-30-2004 02:31 PM

I've never had my doors do this either.

RX-GR8 06-30-2004 02:35 PM

my door does this all the time.

Kwullen 06-30-2004 03:07 PM

I've complained to my friend at the factory, but no reply.
I've also told him to come join the forum so he can relay other complaints to the proper people.
If they don't know about a problem, they can't fix it. Dealers couldn't care less, they let complaints go in one ear and not slow down on the way to the out the other. The Mazda people I have dealt with seem to really care about customer satisfaction.
I complained about cutting my hands on brake parts while washing my wheels. I got a return email from the brake designer at the factory, thanking me for bringing this to his attention and assuring me it would be addressed.

Same here. I guess I'm used to holding the door to prevent hitting the car next to me. I also use the armrest to help me up out of the car.

Have never noticed this problem with door staying open. You might go back to the dealer and try another RX8 to see if there is anything specific with your RX8 that's different from one on the showroom floor. If so, of course it's a warranty matter.

XcelR8 06-30-2004 08:28 PM

This happens all the time in my 8 as well. It is annoying at best, but I don't let it take away from enjoying my car.

Rotary Nut 06-30-2004 08:29 PM

I do what Elara does too. It is a PITA though!

Welcome to Mazda's world of lousy door stays. My '93 MX-6 and my son's '91 RX-7 have identical door stays. The one in the MX-6 driver's door nearly doesn't do anything at all anymore, so I'm used to this problem you're talking about, dancing with the devil door every time you get in or out.

The RX-8 door stays are a bit different looking, but seem to be very similar in function, just newer and yes, they really do have a strong tendency to spring closed for some wierd reason when you don't maintain a hold on them to stop the motion.

In the MX-6, you sit even lower to the ground - a real pain to get out while the door is wanting to block your exit. I hold it open with my left foot - heel against threshhold, toe against the door. Then when ready, I give it a push (not too hard, or it'll rebound & close quicker) and get out quick enough to be able to grab it before it hits me. Always fun when parked on an uphill grade and you have two armfulls of stuff you want to take out of the car with you!

The door flopping around is the one thing I dislike about my 8.
I'll see what trussvile mazda does about it.
They warranteed the leather panel on the back of the drivers seat.
It wasn't attached to the top when I took it home.
I noticed the door getting looser the longer I have it. 2 months now.
In a year it will probably fall off.

Zeltar 06-30-2004 11:47 PM

I don't have this door problem. Sounds like a warranty issue to me.

LittleJohn 07-01-2004 01:11 AM

Mine does it, but the only time it bothers me is if I'm putting groceries or a package or something in the back seat. For some reason at those times, I usually don't take the time to make sure the door is going to stay and when I go to open the back door, the driver door hits me in the @$$. People laugh.

KKMmaniac 07-01-2004 06:51 AM

I haven't noticed this being a problem. I usually hold onto the door, or guide it to the stay's first notch, and it holds itself open fine.

Just be damn happy your car isn't trying to electrocute you like mine is, everytime I get out of it when the air is not humid.

I swear, somebody is gonna find me floppin' and frothin' on the pavement one of these days.
