idling and cooling fan issue

can anyone help? my rx8 wont idle after about 3 min of running when cold. once it has ran for 3 min it idles up and down and cuts out also the cooling fans are not working at all, fitted a new temp sensor, tested the relays/fuses and tested the continuity of all the wires going to the ecu. the car has had a full engine rebuild and new coils, plugs, leads, maf and tps. i bought the car as a none runner. i think the engine failed because of the cooling fan issue the seals had totally burnt out before the rebuild:crying: if anyone can help it would be much appreciated thanks alan :fingersx:

o the car is a 2005 231

Did you try to jump the fans at the relay to see if they work?

How long had it run after the rebuild? The plugs might be fouled. Could be a lot of things. Did you check for vac leaks? Is everything wired correctly? The injectors are often wired wrong

hi thanks for the reply's, the engine has only been up and down the street a few times as it has no mot or tax. when i open it up over 4000 rpm goes like hell with no problems, i have used jumper wires on the relay pins on all 3 fans run fine on the 3 different speeds. i have also tested the wires from the temp sensor to the ecu for breakages all fine. i have checked all over for vac leaks as well. could do with checking the plugs to the injectors. there is hesitation from idle to about 4000 rpm?

i am a mechanic just fancied a dabble in a rotary engine but finding it hard. dont know how the car ran before due to engine being busted when i got it

the running issue feels like the fuel mixture is wrong used petrol like hell. feels like it is under fueling.

Thoughts..

I factory trim, the fans do not come on until about 200 degrees. How long are you running it?

See if it will start and run on its own. Just leave it. Let the ECU learn to idle the engine. Another thought is the cat. Did you get a chance to look at it while the engine was out?

yeah cat fine new one fitted with 2 oxygen senors. i have found the idling issue injectors plugged into the wrong ones how DUMB am i runs and idles great. tested all the wires from the relays to the ECU again to day all fine. when i did the engine rebuild the rotor housings had shrunk both of them and the seals had burnt out. i think the electric fans had failed on the previous owner thats why the rotor housings had shrunk i think. it doesn't seem like the temp gauge is giving the right reading either gonna measure the water temp with a gauge tomorrow. what is the temp that the fans should come on at there are three stages of cooling isn't there CHEERS FOR ANY HELP THANKS

Funny how it won't idle with the fuel going to the wrong place ;) Don't beat yourself up...it has happenned to a few of us in the past.....seems like that is how we figure out a lot of stuff on this..trial and errors ;)

If all the components are working then the only way you are going to change it is to either retune...which I don't think you can if you are in UK...or possibly get one of these..they will work very well in lowering your turn on temperture

Glad is it sorted..

A different approach for cooling is to wire the fans on low all the time. I did this to mine until I got the AP tune, and I still do it when I track. There is a link in the $100 thread in my signature to this one. I used the "solder to the relay leg" approach, and just rant the wire out of the fusebox. I use the screw at the front of the fuse box to ground it when I want to fans on low. I have an open ended terminal on the end of the wire, it grips that screw tight and now the fans are on low.
