An idea I've been working on...
Basically I've been doing some research on the available selection of underdrive/lightened pulleys and I had a an idea. All of the ones that I've seen are either very expensive (for what it is) or piece of crap chinese ebay clones. I'm not seeing a middle ground here. I believe that could be improved. For something maybe 2/3rds the price I could start making lightened and/or underdrive crank pulleys. Same quality part and everything.
My question is this something that you guys would like to see? Would a 20% underdrive be ideal or is there a different option that isn't offered (i.e. 25% etc). Whole pulley sets could be made and belts but I'm wondering if it is even worth it. Is there anything that you guys would like to see regarding pulleys? I hope I'm not breaking forum rules because I'm not trying to sell something here but rather my intention is to gauge interest. If and when it does happen I will be sure to become a vendor before any selling. |
Agency Power already makes a 20% underdrive. Trying to make a lightweight pulley on the RX-8 is useless. It only weights a few pounds stock, so there isn't much to gain on that. Underdrive is the only way, and even that is debated. That said, I'd like something a little more underdriven than 20%. Maybe a 30% UDP would be worthwhile.
I know somebody out there had a 40% underdriven pulley, but the AC belt couldn't fit, so you had to run without AC with the pulley on. |

Have you thought about a short belt ? |
I don't know why it physically wouldn't fit, but I'm pretty sure there isn't a spot for any belt to go. I think the AC is driven by the outer portion of the pulley. I think they eliminated that part.

Ho man busy weekend. Took the 8 out for my first autoX and all I have to say is I'm hooked haha.
Yeah 30% is definitely do-able. A lightweight pulley isn't gonna shave much off of stock but for those that want to dress up their engine bay and gain a little power; ~$100 isn't a bad price. However I will most likely make the UDP first and see if demand warrants a stock size lightened pulley though. I'm thinking of also offering anodized colours as well. What colours would you guys like to see? |
