I hate rocks and big trucks without mud flaps!!!

3 Attachment(s)
Yesterday morning I was driving up to Seattle and as I was getting onto I-205 I got hit by a big rock flung up by some large work truck with no mud flaps on!!! The on ramp starts out with two lanes that curves around a corner and then merges into one. We (the truck and I) went around the corner at the same time and he sped up to get in front of me. When he did that he flung up a large rock from the shoulder since he couldn't seem to manage to drive actually in his own lane and on the road. Now I have a nickle-sized dent in the right side of my hood that is about 3/8" deep. I tried to call my insurance when I got home last night but it was close to 1 a.m. and I didn't feel like sitting on hold. My mom called the body shop for me when I was at my job interview (replacing my crappy job but not the other good job) and they said that if it is perfectly round with no paint damage and no uneven denting and less than 1/2" deep they can fix it. Otherwise, I need a whole new hood. This sucks!!! My car isn't quite a month old.

I'll post pictures in a little bit.

ouch sorry to hear bunny! I guess that gives you a good reason to buy a carbon fiber hood now :)

Howdy1606 04-23-2006 10:14 AM

damn that is a big dent sorry to see that.

MedicineMan 04-23-2006 10:18 AM

Paintless dent repair is the only way to fly. Check with some of you car dealers in town to find out who they use. Some are skilled, masterful artists that make your dollar well spent!

BunnyGirl 04-23-2006 10:20 AM

At least there are no scratches, cracks, or chips of any kind on the paint. Yay for the Teflon coating!! The body shop says it looks perfectly fixable since it is perfectly symmetrical and everything and less than 1/2 deep. They said they need to check something with it first, though. I am waiting for my authorization number from the insurance company now so I can get it fixed or replaced and then have the new hood sealed like the rest of the car is.

Yeah. The body shop I talked to was going to do that. They just said they would need to check on something about my hood first to see if it was feasible with the dent I have. I think it had something to do with the materials used in the hood. They said as far as they could tell, that should work just fine. If I don't use this body shop I will probably use the one through my car dealership, but I couldn't get somebody on the phone there this morning. They may be closed on Sundays but I don't know since I don't have their hours, just the phone number. My mom called the people she has used before to have her windshields fixed. They do good work.

I just have to get the authorization number from my insurance company, which they said I would have by the end of theday tomorrow. Until then I can't take it in to get the repairs started. At least my deductible is only $100. :) It also appears the insurance company will cover my coating if I need a new hood.

If you're that compulsive about cleaning up your bumper and hood after getting dinged and hit by debris on the highway, then the bodyshops are sure going to love you cause you'll be there twice a month. Get used to shit hitting your car, or get a daily driver and keep the RX-8 for weekends. A clear bra would help a little too, at least for the front bumper.

By the way you never posted those nav pics :crying:

BunnyGirl 04-23-2006 11:29 AM

So far my 8 does only go places on weekends. My mom is still my transporation to work until I get a license plate on my car. Otherwise, security said they can't guarantee they won't tow it if there isn't a plate registered with them. I can live with little paint chips from rocks and stuff but I can't stand the dent!!! It was a pretty nice-sized rock. I saw it coming and heard it hit but there wasn't anything I could do about it. I figured I was going to have a big paint chip but I don't. The paint is fully intact and perfectly smooth. No cracks or anything. This is one of the reasons the body shop thinks they can fix it easily. The coating I had put one is supposed to help protect against rock chips and stuff, so I guess it did a good job in this instance.

SORRY!!!!!! I checked out all the details on my navigation (used it yesterday :) ) and it is the same as the previous models. The quick guide that was talking about taking voice commands and whatnot was talking about the version of the system that will be in the CX-7. I was a little disappointed but I still like it.

BunnyGirl 04-23-2006 12:58 PM

Well, I can take it into the shop tomorrow afternoon to be worked on. They will cover a whole new hood plus my coating if it is needed. They said I will also get rental car reimbursement since I said I didn't need a rental at this time. He said depending on how long they need it to fix it, my $100 deductible may not cost me anything!! :)

If it was a work truck (company vehicle utilized for hauling) then you should have got his license plate # and made a claim.

BunnyGirl 04-23-2006 01:44 PM

Apparently Oregon doesn't work that way. They don't care too much if it is a rock or something because it is a lot more work for the insurance company that way. If they lose something off a truck and hit you, then it is easier. About two years ago my mom had a vehicle fling up a big rock and cause a substantial crack in the windshield. we got the plate number and everything off the vehicle and gave it to the insurance company. They said it didn't matter because it was far too much trouble to go through the process and it is next to impossible to prove that vehicle caused something to happen. They said for damage caused by rocks not dumped or flung at you by a vehicle specifically hauling rocks they just pay for it since it works out being cheaper time and resource wise.

damn Bunny,
I really feel for you cause I've been reading your posts leading up to finally getting your car. I just picked up my Galaxy Gray this week and ALMOST had some cell-phone talking soccer mom plow into me (and I couldn't find the horn..........:)))

If it was me (and fully well knowing that its an uphill battle) I would have followed the truck and start snapping cell phone photos, anything I could get to identify the truck. Then I would have made a very big stink to them before going to my insurance company.................

..........sorry again...........

rx8wannahave 04-24-2006 06:53 AM

Such a baby 8 getting hurt...dang trucks, yet another reason to dislike them.

Sorry and I hope you get them fixed ASAP.

BunnyGirl 04-25-2006 10:01 AM

I dropped my car off yesterday on the way to work. After they hosed off the bug guts I didn't have time to wash it was discovered that there are some scuffs in the paint in the dent and two to three more scuffs going up the hood from the dent like the rock skipped. They said the dent was "nice" enough that they can take it out no problem without needing a new hood. Said it was relatively shallow, just spread out. However, since it has scuffs on the paint, they have to repaint the hood. I have to wait 30 days after they paint it to get the sealant reapplied to it, though. They said they expect it to be done sometime Friday, which means most likely I can get it on Saturday. I don't have the cost estimate yet since I didn't have time to wait around and find out as I was on my way to work. I have a $100 deductible. Somebody should call me this afternoon, hopefully before I have to leave for work.

OMFG thats a crazy dent!!!
Sorry :(
Best of luck

Michael 04-25-2006 10:08 AM

Hopefully you can PDR it out, I feel your pain, my car's whalloped to all hell by other students being lazy and inconsiderate.

Damn. I really am sorry to hear that. It sucks when I hear another blue in some type of mishap. Hopefully things will work out for you. Take care.

mmats69 04-25-2006 10:33 AM

just a thought......

winning blue is a hard paint to match. you may want to take it to a mazda dealer for the paint job or just get them to order a hood already painted from mazda. i just added a spoiler to my car and thought they'd never get the paint to match on it. it did take them a few tries.

mmats69 04-25-2006 10:36 AM

btw....almost made a self-portrait in the first pic. :)

lshu 04-25-2006 10:57 AM

ouch... i thought the golf ball-sized piece of cement that hit my hood was bad, but this rock must have been huge!! My damage was a decent-sized paint chip, but no dent.

icyur2 04-25-2006 11:56 AM

That is why Oregon need a damn law for these freakin trucks with no mud-guards. They ride high, have huge ass wheels, cruising down the highway and flinging shit at all cars behind them. I get pissed at everyone of them that cuts me off because I'm sure they are aware that they are flinging crap to the front of your car and grinning...would you say "intentional" damage to a motor vehicle??? Sorry to see that you had to go through this...REALLY sucks...

BunnyGirl 04-25-2006 12:27 PM

Hopefully it comes back just like new. :)

daisuke 04-25-2006 01:38 PM

mudflaps really don't work for a damn, they can still fling rocks sideways, i hate gravel trucks too!!! nothing worse than driving down the highway and hearing a bunch of little clicks as they hit your paint and windscreen.

at least it didn't crack your windshield bunny.

icyur2 04-25-2006 01:43 PM

Yes, but it is better than no flaps! At least if they have it, and you are behind them, it lowers the chance of getting pelted by the rocks, etc. As for the side, no way around that than to speed past them or stay well behind...

DOMINION 04-26-2006 03:30 AM

Wow that is one big dent. Reminds me of the time I worked by a Golf course. Needless to say that job did not last long.
