I had to say bye to my 2005 RX-8 :(

My engine was losing compression and MPG at an alarming rate. I went from ~7.5 to ~6.4 on both the front and rear rotors. The rebuild was going to cost more than she was worth and I had already put $7k in repairs and maintenance in the past year. She went from 19 mpg to 14 mpg. I miss the sound of my rotary, but I am enjoying my new FR-S. Who knows, in a few years I might find a really low mileage R3 or finally get an FD.

I loathe the FR-S. It's right for you, so good on you and congrats.

My '05 6MT 8 has been uncannily reliable through 122,000 mikes now on original motor, pulling as strong as ever.

I've only replaced brake pads, wires/plugs, battery (twice), one wheel (serious curb rash), coils - all regular maintenance items.

I've also used 10w-30 dino oil and a synthetic filter and done oil changes from 3,000 to every 4,500 miles, depending (while making sure oil is at or slightly above full line at all times).

Oh, and I've flushed/changed coolant 3 times and will again in two months (monitoring it for Ph every year).

This has been an incredibly reliable car for me, and still rides tighter and without rattles than friends' newer vehicles with 1/2 or even 1/3 the miles on them.

I have no idea what I will replace it with when the time comes, but it may just be a well-maintained, one-owner 2010 or 2011 RX-8!

(Curiously, after driving everything from G37s to Lexus ISs to BMW 335s and everything in between, I may just go with an Accord V6 coupe with a manual transmission, before they quit making them in that configuration, as that Honda V6 pulls surprisingly hard and puts down impressive crank and to-the-wheels horsepower bone stock. I thought about a V-dub GTI but was burned once by VW and once by Audi previously).

Sorry to hear about your 8. Those Toyobaru twins can be pretty quick autocross and track cars. For me, I'm intrigued by the power that tuned 335i N54 motors are putting down. That would be my next car - just for a change.

Thank You

That Accord V6 is an underrated car. I had 105,000 original miles on mine. She was good, I changed the oil religiously and used 10W-30 too. I replaced everything like you as well. She won't be my last Rotary though. I might get an RX-7 to try something else. I love the FR-S for the same reason I loved the RX-8 minus the Rotary engine. I just don't have the time to work on my car anymore. I was working around 80 hours a week when I got rid of the RX-8.

Enjoy the FR-S. I see a lot of them at the track.

If you can find a properly swapped Ls Rx-8 that might be an option too. It changes the characteristics of the car, but it's something to look into. I myself am probably going to go down that road in the future. LS swapped R3 would be nice.
