How to save dough on fuel

Since I work in the financial industry, I have a Thompson stock screen in front of me all day. The price of a barrel of oil is displayed.

One way to save money is simply to watch the price of oil. Gas prices generally respond in a week- meaning that by early next week, the sub $60.00 bbl oil prices we just got should reflect at the pump (in addition to a lot of inventory backing up)

It's become a pretty good predictor of fuel costs. Today, I just filled it with $10 of fuel. Next Monday, I'll top it up, hopefully for .40 less per gallon

Sell the car and get a motorcycle :p

If only I had a 10,000 gallon fuel tank. I'd buy futures on margin. Might effect MPG, though. . . LOL

I buy gas twice a week, this does me no good :(

I've owned five motorcycles! Reminds me: I had a Yamaha 650 twin during the '73 gas crisis, and in those days, removing a gas tank from a motorcycle was a snap: lift the seat, pull the feed tube to the carbs, and lift- you could carry thing like a football.

When the lines got long, I simply parked on the side of the gas station, removed the tank, and strode up to the pump island- there were usually three pumps (one for each grade in those days) and I filled the tank from the unused pump, mounted the tank, and rode off. No waiting.

MPG on my 8 doesn't bother me- but if you can save some dough from an over manipulated market, why not?

I bought a motorcycle, i fill up twice a week.. but it's only 6 bucks a fill :)

dillsrotary 01-04-2007 07:24 PM

move to kuwait, its 18 cents a gallon.

guy321 01-04-2007 07:26 PM

Yeah, but how much is water?

SilverEIGHT 01-04-2007 07:50 PM

1 tank = 5 days of driving if I'm lucky! I do appreciate your observation though.

Great, isn't it? :hahano:

If I go nowhere else except to and from work I can generally make 6-1/2 trips right now with the oxygenated crap. When they switch back and my mileage improves back to normal I can get 7-1/2 to 8 trips. Since I do usually end up going other places at least once time a week I have to get gas about once a week.

I'm so jealous...
...I buy $15 worth a DAY.

It's almost time to start trying lower octane fuels... :(

That's great a finacial analyst that says gas prices will drop 40 cents in three days.

You are some gulable guys.. by the way I have a used RX 8 that I want to sell you for 28.8k

I'm not being rude here, just pointing out that this doesn't help us save any money on fuel.

"One way to save money is simply to watch the price of oil. "

How is watching the price of oil going to help me save money on fuel driving the RX8? That part wasn't explained.

"Gas prices generally respond in a week"

What kind of RX8 owner has a tank that lasts a week? If, by "watching the price of oil", through technical analysis I arrive at the conclusion that oil is going to be more expensive next week, but drop off a bit thereafter, what is an RX8 owner supposed to do? Go two weeks without refueling, hoping to pick up gas a few cents cheaper on the third week--maybe? I think not.

It's cool that you work in the financial industry though.

Now, how about 80,000 shaft horsepower, quad General Electric LM 2500 engines, and 10 million gallons of fuel?

If gas drops from $66 a barrel to $57 in just three days, the price of gas will follow- it's already down a dime since my last trip three days ago. Gasoline inventories are also up sharply more than predicted.

These are two commodities that are actively traded every day. What happens in the trading pits at the CBOE affects what YOU pay at the pump.

I get around 220-250 per tankful, and if you drive a lot every week, I can't help you. However, if you don't and you KNOW gas will be cheaper once the oil that is traded at a lower price hits the retail pipeline some days later, you could save some money. I'm not using any technical analysis- that's for trading off nickel and dime spreads.

It won't pay for any credits at MIT, or change your life, but it could save you a few bucks.

I pointed this out since we still have so many crybabies on this forum about the MPG- whether these people are actually RX-8 owners is another story.
