How much is it worth? 2005 RX-8 GT 6M needs new engine

Long-time RX-8 owner and forum member here. I am sure my time with an RX-8 is coming to a close.

2005 RX-8 Grand Touring, Six-Speed Manual
Black/Red-Black interior
86K, full maintenance records (Rotorsport)
Engine has went from working well to falling apart in a couple months
Everything is stock and interior is in excellent shape
One mention on Carfax when I used insurance to fix a small dent on the lower drivers door. (Shouldn't have bothered to claim it, lesson learned)

I am just curious how much I should dump the car with engine issues? I am not expecting much. $2-3k?

Fortunately, I am not relying on the proceeds for my next car. Looking at a 2013 MS3, 2011/2012 BMW 1 Series, among other cars.

Thanks for your help everyone!

I would say 3k is fair with your description of the car. A reman will cost the average person $3500.00-$4,000.00 easy so it would not be worth it to most to pay more than $3,000.00.

I paid 2950 for my 04 117k miles with what they thought was a bad engine.

It has every option except Nav and 6 disc changer.

If I had an extra 5k lying around, I'd gladly give you 3 for it.

Ouch, only 3k. Good motive for me to keep mine - never sell it or trade it in. Someone else would just a good car for next to nothing.:shocking:

Well Mazda raised the Price of the remans by almost double to $3300.00 ish and upped the core charge to $1600.00. So that alone drops the price of a non running RX-8 significantly since the 04's are past the 8 year 100k engine warranty. Even if someone were to rebuild the engine them-self and installed on their own it would cost over $3,000.00 easy. And why would someone go thru the trouble when you can find a clean running 04' RX-8 (often with a low mileage reman from Mazda already in it) for $6,000.00 or so? Sad facts, which is why I would never sell mine. I will just keep rebuilding engines ever couple of years and having fun :)

Thanks 9krpmrx8. I did read Mazda upped the price on those reman engines. Since the car is getting so old, the new engine is almost the value of the car.

Yeah and value depends on the person. I had been trying to find a new replacement but everything I test drove disappointed and the ones that did not were $50,000.00 plus. So I just bought a clean Acura Integra GSR as a daily and I will keep my RX-8 pristine and just wait until I find a car in my price range that strikes my fancy. The RX-8 is just such a great car, especially when turbocharged and properly sorted.

Yeah, up to the point where Mazda increased the price on the remans things were quite different. You could sell a non running 8 for a fair price, since the buyer had the option of getting a Mazda reman for less than 2 grand.

But with those prices now, you might as well get a rebuild from a reputable builder instead.

I think I'll also be keeping my 8 for the long run...
