RX-8 Discussion General discussion about the RX-8 that doesn't fit in one of the specialty forums.

How many of you think you'll get 100,000 miles from your RX-8 with no major repairs??

^Precisely the results one would expect with a brand new model. Toss out results from the first year of model/new engine/teething problems, and you're left with reliability that's average—or better.

That fact, combined with all the long-term road tests of the 8 (none of which say a word about engine replacement, engine failure, or premix—not a single article), and the old advice about "avoiding the first year of a new model" rings out loud and clear.

People here may not like to hear it but, properly maintained—and unmodded—the Renesis is about average in reliability, if not better.

If you look over all the engine ratings for major problems you will see it is very rare for Major engine problems to occur even in the fist year. The vast majority are far above average or above average including first year cars.

Long term test reports huh.....well lets look at this. There are about 4 or so of them out there and how many RX-8 have been produced. What are we looking at about a .00001% sampling, well I'm convinced. I believe your own survey you started about engine replacement has the RX-8 with close to a 20% failure rate and a much higher sampling....interesting, no?

Your last comment is just plain wrong. The vast majority of RX-8 are 04's and they have a far below average rating for major problems.

I wish I could say you are right but reality keeps getting in the way.

Man you took the words right out my mouth. 68k in two years, drive her aggressive , but I also take care of her, I think I will see 100K and beyond without any major repairs. Besides flooding it one time, which is more human error than a mechanical failure, my RX-8 has been more reliable than my '94 gas sipping civic. My Rx-8 never left me stranded, never gave me funky electrical problems like my 95' BMW 328 at 30k miles. Always started in the cold when i went up North to visit friends or starting up in the blazing summer heat down here in Fl. Never had any mistery rattles like my previous 3 Z cars, or blew through MAFS like my '02 Maxima did. And i took care of these cars and they still gave me problems. Nope my Rx-8 has been good to me from day one when i picked her up with 12 miles on her.

But it all goes back to that faithful saying, you take care of your car , your car will take care of you.

This is a pretty old thread, I'm sure there is a newer one with top mileage cars in it... but I'm at about 170k now. No major enegine issues, still the origional clutch... however I have had two sets of oil cooler lines put in (both sets rusted out) and I had one of my radiator fans give out this winter.

Oh, and I've been through like 3 reverse switches, they were all cooked... but the last seems to be holding up so far.

I will be tackling the rust around my rear wheel wells again this Thanksgiving... so far I would say my biggest issues have been rust related! Have to hate the New England weather and salt on the roads. Also not helping is probably that I park in a semi heated garage which I'm sure is accelerating the chemistry of the rust every night when I come home from work Speaking of rust... my heat shield is being held together with pipe clamps (thought about just removing the pieces that were falling off... but they were actually mostly intact and seem to be working and not rattling with the pipe clamps... so that is a $1 fix for now).

Guess I should also mention that the sensor in my coolant overflow tank is giving out... but considering I have a 2004 and many of them failed at less than 50k, guess I can't complain. It still works enough that I know I have coolant, so I guess I'll just ignore the intermittant light when it comes on on the highway. When it gets worse I will have to consider dealing with it. Replacing the whole tank is such a stupid solution for a simple switch!

No core engine problems yet. But my cat recently died. Good thing mazda has a 112,000km warranty on emissions components

At 114,500 miles myself on my original engine, no major repairs. Just a clutch pedal assembly and that was only because it was squeaking.

i'm still at 60 something. mostly because I drove my Mazda3 + starting to drive less cuz gas price goes up.

not that i cant afford the gas price, but im thinking its just not worth it to spend so much on inflated prices. I will wait.

oh yea, I'm on my 2nd engine. so its a hit or miss.

I am at about 92,000. I bought it at 64,000 and I have not had one issue. I just changed my coils and my plugs and they looked great. They might have been changed when I got it but maybe not. I really need to see if any upgrades have been done like starter or anything.... I've had it for 2 years almost lol.

Extended warranties.

I just bought an 06 rx-8 and am totally in love! My first Japanese car, period. Got it at CARMAX. Got 125,000. Bumper to bumper Warranty, and already knew about Mazda's own extended motor warranty for that year model. Bought from Carmax before and have used maxcare warranty service before, great deal! Only adds about $30. A mo to payment. Carmax only way to go for us

149,980 miles on her, no major upgrades just wear and tear , I did notice my starter seems to be getting weaker on starts. Clutch went out on 127k miles, coils went out at 110k miles, brakes pads went out at 115k miles.Planning to change the starter soon, yet she pulls like a raging bull in all gears still . I have to admit after the 140k mark i don't drive my 8 as much since I got another commuter car to take its place, but when i do take my 8 out i really enjoy driving her, she always puts a smile on my face ! Never getting rid of my 8!
