How many of you think you'll get 100,000 miles from your RX-8 with no major repairs??

I got an '04 and no problems. Just need to do the 48mo maint.

Only have 27K miles. Hope this baby lasts long enuff to pass off to my son, but by that time who knows. The fact I see RX7s rolling around I'm not too worried.

Well, close...

Well, I have two of the early 2004 6MT models. Both have had the engines replaced, both have had to have the reman engine repaired, when the rear seal failed.

All of the above was covered under warranty. Mazda took care of us....

I have 98,768 miles on mine, and the engine light went flashing yellow two miles from the dealer. It acted like a coil failed and I was running on one rotor. I tried to limp it in, and got two blocks from the shop when smoke came belching out from under the hood.

Complete problem unknown ... catalytic converter gone, debri in mufler, engine state unknown.

This one is going to cost....

Like I've said before, I'm the only one in here who's going to make it to 200,000 miles without any major issues. Q121825 ain't gonna make it. I'm just wondering if I'll get rid of my car for the 16x. That would be the only thing stopping me from 300,000 miles.

i bought my 04 6spd about 16 months ago with about 45k on it, it died at 76k with low compresion in both rotors. as far as i can tell the previous (stripper) owner didnt know jack **** about taking care of the car. I love my car i would just advise being careful buying one for cheap cheap because like me you might run into some very exspensive problems. good luck and happy driving

I believe that, compared to all cars, the 8 is about average in reliability. That said, I suspect the 8 is far more susceptible to owner neglect than most cars. Not keeping the oil level up and not changing oil regularly is asking for trouble - more so than in ordinary cars.

Easily. I got almost 250k miles out of my N/A FC RX-7 with little or no oil changes and/or maintenance. I expect the 8 to do just as well with regular oil changes and maintenance.

I think the secret is to get ahold of a fairly new 8 with low mileage, BN if possible, and keep a close eye on things. Premix couldn't hurt (Idemitsu, not marine-grade 2-stroke oil).
Picking-up a used 8 is a crapshoot (sorry bose). Especially one that didn't get all the recalls and flash upgrades done in a timely manner, and was driven like Bonnie & Clyde were in the back seat.

Edit: Statistically there should be even some early '04's that make the 100K mark...but obviously, the newer the model and lower the mileage, the better one's chances are of going the distance.

Had my 06 GT since April of '07. It has so far 4100km. At this rate, it will take me more than 26 years before reaching that kinda mileage.

heeey well the only prob i had with my car it was handled by mazda and my cigarret lighter did go out on me haha but it was only the fuse luckily my mazda came with a extra lol..

I have 45 K miles no engine problem.. but my tranny has been rebuilt 2 times haha it was my first standard car soo i take majority of the credit for that one.. but my dealership was sooo HELPFUL even when enterprise wouldnt lend me acar because i was under 21 and the car wasnt under my name mazda went out their way and lend me a car from them.

ONe thing i reccomend people is go with synthetic oil i use 5w-30 royal purple i love it car is much smoother and more responsive in the hot texas weather.. no problems for 20K miles. ANOTEHR THING IS at mazda they dont reccoment the differential oil drained till like 60K miles but.. i did mine at 41K miles and it poured out as if it were MUD! found a ton of metal shavings on the drain plug.. sooo i reccomend change that crappy diffferential; fluid with redline 75-90 highperformance gear oil.. i also have that in my tranny and let me tell you myy shifts are crisp and precise EVEN better than new and ever since my differential oil change the reospinsiveness is BAM as soon as i gun it.. im right next to a mustang GT door to door all the way.. I beat g35's and 350's havent tried a s2k.. but my car isnt stock ...

My mods consist of MSP cold air intake, 9lbs flywheel and 50% stronger clutch, sr power pulleys, cat back exhaust and all my fluids swapped with high performance fluids... havnt gotten it dynoed.. i just ordered that mazsport ignition soo im hoping to be easily over 220 RWHP at the wheels.. thats what i reccomend for anyone who planns to keep the car stock SWAP ALL THE FLUIDS (TRANSMISSION, Differential, ENGINE OIL) best choice you can do on stock car

I really wish I knew, I feel a premature engine failure is a real possibility. Consumer Report Rates major engine problems for the various years as follows.

04 = Far Below Average
05 = Below average
06 = Average

Now does this tells us that Mazda has fixed the problem in later years or does it just take time for the engine to fail. Not enough information to make a call at this time.

If Mazda really believed in this engine it would have been nice to see them back it up with a 100K/10 year engine warranty. The extra year is nice but.....

I'm at 76k now and fully expect to get to 100k. I have an extended warranty just in case.

That's not accurate. Here's engine reliability, off of their website:

Engine, Major (Engine rebuild or replacement):
'04 = Much worse than average
'05 = Average
'06 = Better than average

I went about 120K on just plugs and coil packs. Most recently it's needed an ECU and an oil metering pump.

I'd say I will make it without any serious engine issues, as I'll be doing the routine maintenance to it. People think the biggest enemy of the Rotary is heat or carbon...when in reality, it's someone who doesn't give a **** about their car...

You are correct I miss quoted the numbers sorry everyone my bad. But my original interpretation still stands, we are still seeing a stead decline in reliability in a relatively short time frame. Time will tell.
