Sounds good.

fahrfegneugen 04-23-2008 12:44 AM

Depends on how hard you drive it and where. I check my oil often and mine gets dirty at about 2-2.5k.

Nice job getting the vouchers :)

laythor 04-23-2008 02:24 AM

i changed my oil within the first few hundred miles when it was brand new.. then about every 1.5 after that.

kersh4w 04-23-2008 12:14 PM

thats ridiculous. mazda recommends changing the oil every 7,500 miles.

i change mine ever 3-3.5k. no need for 1.5k.

Renesis07 04-23-2008 12:15 PM

I shoot for every 2K, usually run late and do it around 2.5-3K. The longest ever was 4000 miles.

Mustve missed that chapter in my owners manual

mauricio 04-23-2008 10:44 PM

Yeah so 2.5k sounds good. maybe after the first 600 break in miles i'll get the first oil change I have about 40 oil change coupons more than i'll need for now...

I have had two 8's and have changed the oil ever 2,500 or less and have never had any probs. Some will tell you that your not getting your moneys worth blah blah blah B.S. Just keep up on the oil pre-mix and keep an eye on your idle / plugs also redline your 8 and your 8 will love you :smoker:

Design1stCode2nd 04-24-2008 11:34 AM

1,500 for the first 4-5k after that. Unless its a track only car then probably more.

We do continuely add new fresh oil to the engine so an interval of 3k seems silly.

04RX8man 04-24-2008 01:20 PM

3000 miles 3500 at max for me

Are-Ex-Eight 04-26-2008 10:18 AM

what oil do you put in? snythetic...this is a newb question but is it harder to change the oil on an rx-8? havn't done it yet, need to soon, im at 2200 miles

mauricio 04-26-2008 03:14 PM

Regular oil 5w20 I do the car oil changes at the dealer.. No synthetyc.....

LOL @ listening to a "MAZDA" manual.

7500 miles? LOL

I change my oil every 3 months, regardless of mileage. One 3 month period back then, i only put 125 miles on it and i still changed it.

Theres no harm nor a rule that states you shouldnt. Its cheap, easy to do and your engine can ALWAYS use fresh oil.

SilverEIGHT 04-26-2008 07:34 PM

1st change: 100 mi. ... Don't laugh!
2nd change: 500 mi.
3rd change: 1000 mi.
4th 3000
5th + every 3000

This is only my opinion. I think the first one at 100 miles is the most important because of the break-in. With my new engine I followed this routine. When I removed the oil at 100 mi. it was very dark and had the shimmering content of metal particles.

I changed it at 500 and the oil was much clearer but since it was still a fresh engine, I thought it a good idea to keep it as clean as possible. The change at 1000 was probably not really needed but since I wanted to make sure the break-in process was as good as could possibly be, I did it anyway. 3000 is it magic number in my book with regular driving to and from work and road trips.

If I track, I change the oil much more frequently and try to change it before and after an event. I know this is over kill but the one thing I want to make sure I do with this engine is to give it every chance to be clean inside.

If you change it yourself, it's pretty cheep to do. If I were having someone else do it, I wouldn't do it as frequently. Call me obsessive but I just like clean oil.

Also, I'm running 20w50 in the summer and 10w40 in the winter. I'm not comfortable with Mazda's suggested 5w20 or 7500 miles at all.

7500 miles for Schedule 1. Schedule 2, oil changes at 5000 miles or 4 months, applies to most of us, but a little more often does not hurt. I also change at 3 to 3.5K, like you do.

read it again.

800 miles even less. but that was for piston engines to remove all the left over metal.

We have less moving parts, so......... anything should be fine up to 3k

mauricio 04-30-2008 11:15 PM

Dam SilverEIGHT wow your serious about oil changes. I did mine @ 600 miles next will be every 2.5k miles..

SilverEIGHT 05-01-2008 04:54 AM

Yep! I'm very serious about those first three changes. If you had seen what came out after the first 100 mi., you would be too. :)

valpac 05-01-2008 11:13 AM

1st @ 700 and < 3000 ever since and no plans on changing the schedule. I HAVE changed to 10W40 from 5W20 though. My car has 59K awesome miles on the clock.
