How many here carry a spare tire?

Just picked one up just incase I get a flat that cannot be repaired on site.

Jedi54 03-16-2007 11:19 AM

I used to carry a spare until I installed my new stereo. I keep forgetting to put it back in.

CarAndDriver 03-16-2007 11:28 AM

No spare. I don't really travel anywhere where AAA cant help me.

04RX8man 03-16-2007 11:38 AM

The only spare I carry is the spare tire in a car (Fix-a-Flat)

Jedi54 03-16-2007 11:41 AM

Fix a flats are NOT nice to TPMS.

+1

I've said it a bunch of times - AAA is the best money you'll ever spend.

And I just couldn't allow my 8 to suffer the humiliation of wearing a 'donut'! :lol2:

Not me (knocks on wood) 53K and no flats :)

Swingblade 03-16-2007 11:53 AM

I live in the sticks and sometimes you can't even get cell phone coverage. Best for me to have a spare. It's like insurance. Depends on where you live. A flat is always going to happen when you need to get somewhere or its flooding rain.

no spare. I won't use that "fix-a'flat" stuff either. I've had one tire go down before. I caught a nail in the tire out in the middle of nowwhere. I took the nail out and put a screw in it's place. Pump the tire back up with a small compressor I carry and that got me to a tire center to have it fixed.

True. It's all relative.

Where I am, I've never waited more that 45 minutes. Usually more like 20-30. Less than that when my old truck needed a jump/battery charge, or something simple. In those cases they just send out one of the pickup truck guys and it's a ten minute wait.

I used to carry the spare in the trunk, but it takes up so much cargo space. I ended up taking it out and haven't got around to putting in back in. I think I'll just put it in for long trips.

ZoomZoomH 03-16-2007 12:37 PM

if mazduh offered the choice between having tpms w/ goo kit or no tpms w/ trunk space killing spare kit, i'd go with the spare kit, the tpms has been more headache than good for me...

DaveCM203 03-16-2007 12:48 PM

Spares! We don't need no stinking spares.

I have the spare tire kit.
Came with the car.
I fly a lot for my job, so I have many trips to and from the airport.
My current luggage "fits exactly" into the space provided.
I mean "exactly" fits. Very little tolerance.
The next time I go to buy new luggage, I will need to take it out to my car to make sure it fits!

I have occasionally taken the spare tire kit out.
It's really simple.

i carry the doughnut that came with the 8. but, when i have time, i eventually want to buy a full-size oem wheel + tire to carry in the trunk. the roads in so cal really suck, and having a full-size spare with a rim on my daily driver has saved me a few times- ie just swap it out and replace the blown one when i have time without driving around w/ the ugly (& less-safe) donut.

ken-x8 03-16-2007 02:02 PM

Does a beer belly count?

No spare. I think I've had maybe three flats (total) on three family cars over the past 20 years. And only one of those needed to be changed, rather than just pumped up and driven to a tire shop.

If I do need to use the goop kit, I'd need to goop-destroy three tires before I've covered the cost of the donut spare.

I just took my spare out last weekend.

MadDashRX8 03-16-2007 02:21 PM

Just recently purchased mine off another member from the board. With my schedule, I have 25 students depending on my prompt arrival daily. I can't be late, and the spare gives me the "feel-good" of not stressing with AAA or Mazda Roadside assistance.

On the flip side, I'll not hesitate to remove it to fit more luggage on a road trip. Not on a tight schedule--I'm getting my moneys worth outta roadside assistance!!!

therm8 03-16-2007 04:12 PM

No spare, and no TPMS. So goop for me.

beancounter 03-16-2007 04:20 PM

I usually carry one of the winter tires as a spare, but it does take most of he trunk space.

otherside 03-16-2007 05:04 PM

Yes I have the spare tire kit.....adds 7.5 hp........

CarAndDriver 03-16-2007 05:43 PM

Also the spare pretty much kills the space in the trunk.

reidswitch 03-16-2007 08:44 PM

Rear strut bar, Tire does not fit...
