So how many RX-8s has Mazda sold? Based solely on my completely unscientific observations here in SoCal, I see a lot more 2004 Acura TLs than RX-8s on the road, even though the 8 has been out a couple of months longer. Have the sales figures been made public?

The rx8 is selling for crazy cheap now, so I'd have to guess the remainder of rx8s is going fast. On east coast I can tell you there are MAD rx8s around now. In fact, tis' just getting so old, I don't even wave to them anymore. I'll see at least 2 a day on way to work. Once this car has been out for several years, they will be allover the place like the Eclipse. That's mazda's intention for the rx8. They want ot to be a dime a dozen car, which is why this car is being massively produced. Give it time. You'll be seing them everywhere before too long.

Well, I feel same way, but unfortunately this isn't the case with the rx8. It's the reason car is selling for well below invoice now, and why dealerships are overstocked. It's not that the car didn't sell well, it's that they produced it in a mass scale for first year. They will cut down production in 05, but there will still be a lot of them. yes this car will be a dime a dozen one day. Unfortunately, rare is something the rx8 will not be. I'd like to get some numbers on 04 rx8s brought to US, Is it 30,000, 35,000. It's definitely in that range somewhere. maybe even more.

production is limtied by the amount of engines they can produce. if you search in the media news section you will find threads on the sales figures going back to last year.

Wow, I didn't know the number was that high (in the range of 30 to 35,000).

I think the best estimate is that there are only about 12,000 3rd generation RX-7's in the states.....

Maybe I should just keep it...........

The 03/04 RX-8 is just on 12 months old & Mazda have just posted the FY2003 sales figures for the car.

This is total production from start in May-03 to Apr-04 = 75,736
Japanese sales are .......18,366 Rest are exports

Interesting stat. .......... FD Rx-7 production from 92-02 was 65,000.

To follow up on my previous post, I do have to admit that I have seem many more RX-8's in the last couple of months here in Southern California.

One of the things that I love about my 93 RX-7 is the fact that it is so rare. Most people have no idea what it is, and look surprised when I tell them it's an RX-7. They then ask if it is a 2004 model!

If 35,000 RX-8's were sold in its first year alone, it seems obvious that this would not happen with the 8.

I love being unique. I think the RX-8 is definitely a unique car, both cosmetically and mechanically (obviously with the Rotary motor).

To be honest, I would actually not want to see this turn into a common car that everyone sees all the time. I'd much rather have people say "cool car, what is it?" any day.

I went to the movie theatre last night and saw 4 RX8's as I was looking for a parking space. In the last few months I would say I have really noticed an overall increase in RX8 around town. (Dallas TX)

Yep, I am seeing more RX8s all the time in Vegas. It will be interesting to see how sales progress over time.

I can't imagine everyone that buys one will be dilligent about checking the oil (I went through a quart after 2300 miles). Since it isn't a drive it and forget it car, I throught the popularity would be more limited.

The RX-8 has some quirks that limit it's appeal.

On the other hand, I don't mind seeing more of them simply because I like seeing them Also, the more of them there are out there, the less companies will be able to ignore it for aftermarket parts.

There are a lot of pros and cons, but you all had to know with a low price tag, 4 seats and a great bang for the buck, the RX-8 was destined to be in many a garage.

You guys should be happy for every single RX-8 Mazda sells. The future of the rotory engine depends on it. This can lead to Mazda building a more exclusive rotory sports car if the market demands it and Mazda sees a potential profit to be made.

I always like how people talk about how exclusive or great the RX-7 was when it was in fact a sales disaster for Mazda. $40k in a 95 was a lot of money.

Besides, a $30k car in California is the norm and hardly the option to be different. You have to pay to be different or perhaps a kit car.

I've had my 8 for 1 month. Last weekend, I saw another 8 for the first time, parked near my house. Yesterday, I saw 4 driving around plus another one this morning. It's a poor basis for sampling, but anecdotally it seems to becoming more prevalent.

I bought my 8 in March, and saw 3 so far to date... one titanium on the highway in May, another titanium last month in town (I guess I'm not the only one now!!! ) and a black two weeks ago on the highway....

So, in almost six months, I've only seen 3.... I kinda like that...

The fact that the 3rd gen RX-7 was a sales disaster for Mazda in the U.S. does NOT make it any less exlusive or less great than it truly is!

the mazda dealership here has sold around 15 since march and i have only seen 4 on the road .i dont know if they are selling them to people who live in other cities or what.what color do you see the most on the road?black is the only color i have not seen around town .

The Mazda RX-8 is a rare car around here in southern New England.

In the past year or so, I've seen a TOTAL of 6 RX-8's (and I drive 30 miles to and from work and usually take long trips on the weekends), and that includes seeing the same one twice (there's a black one that lives near me). I've seen a Ti Gray on the highway once, a yellow one near my house, a blue one by my work, and another black one by my work.

I don't know, maybe it's just luck that I haven't seen too many.

I've seen almost as many Audi S4's.

I see 350Z, G35, Acura TL, just about every single day, and a lot of times I see them more than once in a day.

Where in CT you live? I live in the New Haven area... I've only seen 3 RX 8's, maybe one was yours? 2 TIT and 1 black... You're right, I see waaaaayyy to many Audi's

Just yesterday I saw 4 BLUE RX8s in less than 25 minutes!!!!!
I know they were all different, one had a front bra, one had the stock ground effects, one was just totally stock and the other had different wheels.
So i know they were all different.

It was just crazy that they were all blue and i saw them in such a small amount of time.


But normally i see 2-3 RX8s a day. All colors, yellow being the most rare.


Still I see G35, acura TLs alot more often.

Why does rarity even matter? I mean, c'mon, we haven't bought Ferraris at $250k a pop. We've bought $30k mass-produced sporty cars. Exclusive, it ain't. Almost anybody with a decent paying job can afford one of these. And what's wrong with that? We should be happy Mazda is even making another rotary-engined car. Disappointing sales killed the 7, do we want the 8 to be killed just so we can be in some exclusive club? What would be the name of that club? People Who Bought a Car Nobody Else Wanted? You want a car that nobody else has - get a Porsche Carrera GT. If you want a great car for a decent price, you've already got it. It isn't going to take long for other people to figure that out, too. Does a great car at a great price become less of a great car if it actually sells?

I think it's cool that other people have the same taste in cars that I do. That's what has drawn all of us to this forum. I didn't buy the car because I care what other people think, or because nobody else in my neighborhood has one or because I hope nobody else is going to buy one. I bought the car because it looks great, sounds great (I simply love the way the engine sounds), and has a rotary engine.

But that's just my 2/100 of a dollar.

I have only seem a 7-8 since last fall when I began considering my own purchase. I don't really care how many people own them. I sort of like the mystique and rarity at the moment. I currently drive a white Explorer. Anybody seen less than 10 of those today? As my signature shows, I am still waiting for delivery of mine (any day now, I hope). It will be the first on my block for sure. Maybe even in the neighborhood. I did read that Mazda's overall global sales were up in 2003 and they sold 14,627 RX-8's domestically in Japan last year.... sounds good.

Hopefully there are enough enthusiastic folks out there like us who will keep the RX-8 popular and in production for a long time. It will be interesting to see how it evolves and how the introduction of a new 7 in a couple of years affects sales.
