How "LOW" can you go!! -- for the risk takers!!
I was wondering the lowest everyone has decided to go on the gas light.. I was at my all time riskiest this weekend.
the number im looking for is the most gas you have had to put into your tank, without have completely ran out of gas. i barely made it into the gas station and filled (15.335) gallons in the tank !!! that is the most I have ever put in.. therefore the ballsiest i have ever been on pushing the most gas out of a tank!!! |
holy cow. you definitely have balls to let it go THAT low. The most I have ever put in is something like 14.25.
I think you must have pulled up to the station running on fumes. |
The most i've put in was 14.9
|
Damn... are you Cosmo Kramer?! Looking at my spreadsheet, my riskiest tank has been 14.39 gallons... I remember the needle being way below the E line- I was on a rural highway in the middle of nowhere, Indiana... pucker factor was very high.
|
Damn!
My balls ran out and $/gallon no longer mattered. I caved-in, putting in 14.2-something. To quote another post, I had SERIOUS pucker factor...

I've run out twice now.
First time was back in the spring. IIRC, it took 14.9 gal plus whatever was left of the gallon I put in with the filler can 5 miles from the gas station. Second time was a few weeks ago, but I didn't fill it because I left my wallet at home and only had a $5 bill in my pocket. Lame. In both cases, the light came on slightly under 30 miles from a completely dry tank. |
As soon as my fuel light comes on i always note the mileage. i know right then and there that i have about 25 miles of granny-shifting left.
most i've ever pumped in was 15.3ish....whole way to gas station i was getting myself in to push mode. |
I am a wuss. Most I have ever filled is around 14 gallons. Glad to know I still had some to go.
|
With the E (enough) light on ....the most I've ever put in is 14.002 gal 300mi 21.426 mpg
|
Isn't that bad for the car?
|
My car started stuttering on the freeway about a month ago, but i was able to make it to the gas station. Once I filled up I was only at 14.8 gallons.
|
Hard on the heart - thats for sure.
|
I ran out of gas on the expressway yesterday. Just in case you were wondering, my car didn't sputter, knock, or give any warning prior to going dead. Luckily there was a gas station close by so I filled up the car using a gallon container. I put 14.3 gallons in afterwards.

I don't understand why you guys would drive your car until it was empty?
Is there some satisfaction in doing that? Is it out of pure curiosity? Or, are you guys so tight that you want to be able to extract the last drop of fuel? :) Seriously, I don't get it. |
It's not good for the car. First off the fuel pump is fuel lubricated if I'm not mistaken. You really don't want to run it/them dry too often.
|
Nojooc I don't think they get an satisfaction from it other then finding out in an emergency how long they can go if they after the light goes on. Also sometimes it can be a case of tiredness since after work I sometimes leave work with less then a quarter tank and I'll just tell my self that I'll fill it tomorrow until I wake up the next day and completely forget about it until I see the light in the corner of my eye.

poor fuel pump
The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel around it. Getting below the fuel light is just overheating the pump with no need. I 'm not sure how long they will last to begin with, but overheating them sure won't help any. I rarely let mine get below the 1/4 tank level. In fact I haven't seen my fuel light go on yet.
I'm betting a new fuel pump for these cars is pricey, so don't push your luck if you don't have to. |
You would have to run the tank completely dry and then operate the fuel pump for several minutes for it to even be an issue.
Running low on fuel is the same as a full tank to the fuel pump. A new pump is about $300 and can be replaced in about 1/2 hour (it is under the rear seats). |
The most I've ever put in is 14.05 gal. I thought the tank was larger than what some of you guys that ran out completely are reporting. I always get nervous if I go over 240-250 miles, I start doing calculations in my head and worrying... I think of my worse mileage to date and then multiply by 15 and it's always less miles than I've driven so I think about the average, around 18 and decide to stop asap... the last time I had 265 miles when I stopped and added 14.05 gals. almost 19 mpg, about the best I ever get. :D
|
Ran it below the empty mark the other day - wasn't paying attention on the track
I put 6 litres in at a no-name petrol station and then drove 5.5 miles to the Shell where I put another 51 litres in! I can only have used a litre or so between garages so that's 55 litres altogether... |
By the way - the portion of the gauge below the halfway mark disappeared a LOT quicker than the portion of the gauge above... the gauge is NOT LINEAR. (Especially considering my driving was smoother and better in the afternoon session and so mpg likely went up.)
Just so you know... 9.5mpg! |

I think the most I've pumped into the tank is 13.6 gallons. I start experiencing ball shrinkage when the warning light comes on :D 1.3L |
