How long do you plan to keep your RX-8?

Long-term ownership?

yomomspimp06 02-01-2014 10:27 AM

I've had her for 10 years now. It's the best car I have ever owned. I will drive it until it is no longer safe to do so or there is no longer a supply of gasoline.

BigCajun 02-01-2014 10:43 AM

I would like to keep it as long as possible. There may be a time when it's no longer practical to keep it, & I may be forced to give it up. I don't want to think about that day.
My daughter says she wants it, but I don't know if she fully understands what's involved with the idiosyncrasies of ownership.
I don't know if she would end up regretting it, and I would hate it if that should happen.

Almost sold it before I put the new engine in. Now that I'm driving it again and have an engine with compression, I can't believe I ever had a notion to sell it. I will definitely have the car until I can't drive it anymore, at which point it will become a project car to be restored and driven again.

I wish I had been financially able to keep my six previous rotary Mazdas over the past decades. But I plan on keeping my 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 forever. Only 1000 were made just like this for the American market, so it is a limited edition.

ScallopedRotors 02-01-2014 11:46 PM

Until I am dead.

Instigator 02-02-2014 12:25 AM

Forever. It's my favorite case I've ever owned

Wow, the responses so far are very encouraging to me. Lately, I've dabbled with idea of possibly replacing my 2004 after 9+ years of ownership. I've long wanted a Mustang. In fact, I was seriously considering the 2004 Mustang until I learned that it would bump up my insurance rates considerably. So, I shelved that idea until the recent announcements of the new 2015 Mustang.

But then something unexpectedly happened the other day. I had a doctor appointment and his parking lot was full. So, I parked on the street, just across from the office. When I came out an hour later, there was my beloved 8, giving me a full profile. I honestly hadn't looked at from that angle and distance in a very long time. It was stunning! My 8 is super-clean as I've been having it regularly washed at waxed at a local car wash. Also, I recently completed painting the wheel hubs black (they had light rust) and the brake calipers red. I don't know what else to say except that I realized that my 8 really is exceptional - in many ways. It's a keeper!

Selling mine now at 2 years of ownership. Its a house deposit and a R32 GTST Skyline for me

ShadowDragon78 02-02-2014 01:13 PM

Keeping it for as long as I am physically able to drive it.

NO_PSTNS 02-03-2014 12:23 AM

1 more engine rebuild.

I just fished its first full engine rebuild (oil control ring failure) @ 60,000.

I will own it until I have to rebuild the motor again, do so, drive it for 500 or so make sure it’s all good, then sell.

god5peed 02-03-2014 12:43 AM

I'm keeping it forever. This will be my race car, as a hobby.

ls2_funky 02-03-2014 03:18 AM

FWIW (literally.. the car value), getting rid of the car doesn't even make sense, as you can't ever get your money back haha! After accepting the maintenance of it, driving the car is extremely enjoyable and my fiance loves her baby. So the mix of all these adds up to us keeping the car until:
1)We die
2)I become unable to perform the maintenance it requires
3)It gets totaled
4)Any combination of the above mentioned

Redshift 02-03-2014 10:29 AM

I'm a forever as well. I've had this car for over 10 years and have way more sentimental value tied up in it than it would ever be worth to sell.
My first HPDE schools, a trip to Mt. Tremblant for a school, two trips to the DGRR, the Mitty for the Mazda parade lap, Grand-Am at Watkins Glen and ALMS at Lime Rock, my first trip to New York and on and on... all done with this car.
I've owned her from before I met my soon to be wife, and we've been together 10 years next week. I have jokingly referred to them as "sister wives" and lived to tell the tale.

hoosier1104 02-03-2014 01:09 PM

I will drive mine until I am physically unable to drive it anymore. I have driven several different manufacturers and car types, by far the 8 is the most enjoyable. Once I accepted the cost of maintenance, it was a no brainer for me.

icyur2 02-03-2014 04:12 PM

Forever...

Each "re-birth," I'll upgrade to new wheels, etc. If the engine putters out, I'll slap on another engine, and buy lighter wheels..cost less than spending more $$ on a used and boring car!!

niteshade247 02-03-2014 04:33 PM

Will be barried in it.

monchie 02-03-2014 06:15 PM

Until it wears out...

carcrazy95 02-07-2014 08:51 PM

Until they pry my cold, dead fingers from around the stubby short-throw gear shift, and drag my lifeless body out of the seat....

I've owned 103 cars in my life, and there is absolutely nothing that gives me the same thrills as the RX8.

Marklar 02-08-2014 10:25 AM

I've had my 8 for six years now, and there's still no other car that I like better and can afford. Also there may never be another rotary, and I doubt I'll ever own another car I love as much, so I'm keeping this baby for as long as I can. As far as cars go, the 8 is the love of my life, I'll be very sad when I have to say goodbye to her.

JeRKy 8 Owner 02-19-2014 09:52 PM

I thought I was going to be a "forever" owner too. But reality is finally starting to rear its ugly head. My 8 is worth 3 grand now...maybe 4 tops if I found some diehard high school kid who was desperate for one. Driving around in a vehicle that potentially ends up being a total loss even from a minor fender bender at this point in time isn't a whole lot of fun. I can't even drive it the way I used to anymore either - every 3 - 4 months I'm buying another part or paying a repair bill so now I take it easy in the 8. In the past 2 years or so, when you include wear & tear items like brakes, tires, clutch, etc...I have easily spent more than what the car is even worth today. Then again...no car payments during that entire time either which was nice. But my left foot is tired of driving stick too. Guess I'm starting to get old. Forever was a nice dream though.

pistonhater 02-19-2014 11:54 PM

I'll keep mine until Mazda releases whatever rotary engine car comes next...whenever that happens.

BigGunz 02-20-2014 01:41 AM

I will keep mine until I'm too old and decrepit to crawl up out of it.

I've always wanted a Mazda Rotary... Finally got it, never getting rid of her. Marriage is - till death do us part!
