How do you shift? Shifting Pattern

Does everyone just go thur the gears, ie 1st,2nd 3rd, 4th, 5the etc?
Does anyone sometimes skip gears?
like 2nd, 4th, 6th
So what's your pattern?
Depends on driving conditions?

I almost always skip the 5th gear, unless I'm really getting on it.
Just not much difference between 5th and 6th.

I would actually prefer a bigger difference between 5th & 6th (taller 6th?).
My understanding is a taller 6th would lower rpm at highway speeds.
Better gas mileage ... maybe.
Very little increase, if any, I would guess.

Pink Flea Dec 16, 2007 04:09 PM

I skip 3rd and 5th usually....

chetrickerman Dec 16, 2007 04:22 PM

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th most of the time

snipaz2420 Dec 16, 2007 04:23 PM

i only sometimes skip from 4 to 6 if im on the highway. other than that i always go through them all

That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage!

staticlag Dec 16, 2007 04:41 PM

I will usually go from 3rd to 6th when getting on the interstate.

LiTTleRX-8 Dec 16, 2007 06:33 PM

When I first got the 8, being on my first manual, I was skipping 2nd and 5th occassionally.

Now, I go through all the gears.

Gish Dec 16, 2007 06:37 PM

I usually use all of the gears, but will sometimes skip 3rd and 5th.

chancejat Dec 16, 2007 06:38 PM

i skip during daily driving ........no reason i know of to go through all the gears and technically your using up less of your clutch if you skip....definately wouldnt skip while racing though.......maybe turbod guys do?

ken-x8 Dec 16, 2007 07:00 PM

All the gears. If we weren't supposed to use them, they wouldn't be there.

So the combination is one, two, three, four, five? That's the stupidest combination I've ever heard in my life! The kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage!

5th is pretty useless unless you're going uphill

Mazurfer Dec 16, 2007 08:33 PM

My daily redline spot pretty much assures that I am going to skip 4th and 5th.
Don't really redline in 1st, but will run hard thru 2nd and 3rd, then I'm at approx. 85-90mph so right to 6th.
Occasionally I'll miss other gears at given times due to circumstances, but there is so set pattern and not very often.........besides that twice a day redline spot.

It's close enough. It's called poetic license. :)

Look for the quote by Dark Helmet, part way down the page. Or search for "luggage".

If you've never seen Spaceballs, then you haven't seen one of the classics!
