How do you drive other cars, when you own an 8?
 

:) :Eyecrazy: :lol2: I'm coming to realize that you can't drive other cars, the way we drive our 8s. AKA running it through redline before switchin gears.

I notice I find myself looking for the space, to just wind it out. Then I forget, when I drive my friends rides that REDLINING on a piston car is USUALLY BAD. When it's not doing any harm to 8s rotors.

I had a friend recently, yell at me :icon_no2: :lol: , what are you doing?! Ur hitting redline, are you buying me a new engine?? :spank: and it just hits me, like OHHH right, I can't do this in a pistion engine. I think the 8 has really spoiled me, its not the fastest thing on the road, but yet, just laying on the throttle, knowing that I can spin it past 8K without any negative effects, it just puts a smile on my face, whereas in other cars, you have to back off a bit cuz the pistons are moving like crazy, and my throw a rod. Whereas i'm driving the 8 and all i'm thinkin is, hmm i should check the oil later, been running up the RPM a lot today, and not really worrying about, hmm my rotors are gonna start crashing and destruct now.

I gotta say, after owning and driving an 8, it's hard or soemtimes easy to forget that we have to drive piston cars differently, you can't just wind it out and no have any ill effects or consequences. Just found a greater appreciation for the 8. I knew all along you can spin it high all day long, but i never would have thought i might drive a piston car the same way and think everything will be okay :evil_laug

and it hasn't thrown a damn thing yet........except the coolant light.............and the oil pressure light.........yea

Redlining a piston engine normally includes violent shaking and excessive noise. The whole car kinda feels like it is gonna fall apart, or just self destruct.

I am sure this is not true with a well built and highly tuned piston motor. But for the most part, they just are not nearly as smooth as a spinning triangle

The only other cars I ever drive are rentals. So I beat the snot out of them anyways.

Don't forget about Honda's D/B/K series. Those engines can take a beating and still come out on top for miles to come.

I redline any manual car that I'm in at least a few times.

I had to drive a rental kia...

Basically I either was on WOT or full brake...turn-in was impressive for a car with as much body roll as a 2 ton drunken hooker...I also forgot that keeping the engine at redline all the time is bad...but I was impressed at the MPG!

I'm renting a Mazda6 V6 now and its pretty much the same thing...except its a heavy fat-nosed plowing pig...still kinda fun and comfy...great MPG even at 90% WOT...heh

I drive all my cars normally. But when I do have fun, I know their peaks and shift after it peaks.

But I do redline my dads TL-S (manual)

Redlining a piston engine is fine if the engine is maintained, just means you may have to maintain it more often and it will probably break sooner.

But c'mon, what are you gonna do, not redline it?

i just have to remember to get on the brakes much earlier and i actually have to slow down for the turns..

I know we can redline piston cars, I do it on occassion as well, i dunno if its the smoothness of the rotors......but I've held and bumped redline on the 8, in the same sitting. Like hit redline, back off, drops down to 6k, Hit it again. You can stay in one gear longer and bump the redline frequently and it's not like oh crap, this isnt' good for the engine, I always get the feeling of, there more to go with the 8. Keep going, dont worry, kind of feeling.

Whereas in a piston car, i might forget and until someone mentions it, can't ride the redline like you would in the 8. I mean you can, but there so many other parts moving at such a rapid rate, that there always that slight chance, that you're gonna screw something up as you're having fun at it.

I really dont know how else to describe it. I feel the 8, gives me more security with hey its okay to hang out in the high revs near or at redline, only real concern is okay I might be using a lol more oil. Whereas in a piston car, so many things from the crankshaft, to the lobes, to the rods, to the rings, etc, something might wear out and just pre-maturely break.

I guess what i'm tryin to get at, is that i always feel like there more cushion in the 8. When i first got it, i was hesistant to bring up the redline because I was brought up or just used to piston engines, when you hit 5K, that is the bulk of the power curve and with the 8, it was like, is this okay?? And after driving it and ownin for this long now, I'm used to just staying in one gear and just windin it out. But then I get in another car and i forget, this isn't a rotary, until i'm reminded. Which makes me smile cause there are some piston cars that can't handle being redlined everyday. It reminds me that the 8 is unqiue, cause u drive it differently.

I will acknowedge that the honda motors are def strong to hit up redline all day, but for other cars that aren't meant to make power near redline and make most of their power at 4-6K.....its different. That's all. It's usually not beneficial to bump it off the redline consistently on a non high revving piston car. But I did it anyways thinking, i'm waiting for the BEEEP.

The problem with keeping rx8 so high for so long, is it starts to get CEL.

I think 30 to 45 seconds is all you need to get a CEL, nevermind minutes and miles or the whole trip above 7000.

Ditch the CAT...and you'll get rid of that problem...you'll still get a CEL...but you wont trash the CAT in the process...heh

Haha i think the same exact think usually when i'm about 8500 rpm's....oh man i need to check the oil when i get home/fill up with gas hahah....priceless....

Oh man, my poor 94 Toyota pick-up 5 speed, 4 cyl, hates to see me coming. I can't believe it hasn't completely thrown the transmission and blown the engine. It has about 80,000 original one owner miles and the worse abuse it has taken has been the last four years since I started driving the 8. It is starting to use oil now. But I guess that makes me feel more at home with it. Nothing like checking the oil all the time. I guess it was jealous and wanted attention under the hood which it never got before. :D

So anyway, to answer the question, I drive the crap out of it.

Now my wife's Maxima, I have to take it a little easy because it has about 170K mi. on it and I really don't want to be replacing it right now.

huh... I'm the opposite, when I get in any other car I drive like a grandpa... it's jsut not rewarding. I jab my foot to the floor when I'm braking, looking for the non-existant clutch, drive slowly becuase I HATE understeer, and haven't driven a car with a neutral-oversteer characteristic in forever(besides my 9 of course) and I have to remember to allow more time to brake, becuase it's sure not going to stop like I'm used to...

See I kinda like the challenge of a new squishy car...

I got distracted, and tried to put my friend's 5 speed truck into 6th. Strangely enough, the truck didn't want to go into reverse at 65 mph.

The thing i dont like about redlining a piston engine is the fact you can

- easily surpass the oil flow capacity at high rpm resulting in who knows how many different bearings and journals to score and seize.

- float your valves and have them mate with your pistons

- let off the throttle abruptly at redline and have your timing belt slack up against the tensioner causing it to easily skip a few teeth, making your valves and pistons meet.

- the crank shaft is going so fast its causing turbulence in the oil pan, resulting in your oil frothing up and give the same effect as if your drain plug fell out.

I've had my fair share of time working on piston engines to fall madly in love with the rotary and all its genius!

I like the idea of a 12 cylinder 6.0L engine being able to rev like crazy due to the lighter weight of each piston... but not the idea of having to buy a shit load of valves, springs and other parts.

I redlined my Spec Miata every lap of every race for about 50 races. That's a lot of hard-core redlining and it never complained. In fact, it just kept making more power every time I dyno tuned it. Then I sold it :)

Oh yeah, definitely have to remember that not all cars redline so freely.
