How do I use this in the winter?

So I've decided that instead of selling my RX8, I'll just keep it. This is not a seller's market. The thing is that I have an '07 RX8 Sport... that means, no TCS. That's the bad news. The good news, however, is that my commute is 90% highway. I drive about 2 miles on a local road before hopping onto a highway heading to George Washington Bridge into NYC, where I just drive down West Side Highway to the 59th street exit and hop into a garage. This means that I'll probably be mostly driving on roads that are kept clean and well-traveled. What should I do to prepare for the winter, though? My previous car was a RWD too, so I'm not THAT scared. Obviously I'm going to need winter tires... is there anything else? Undercoating?

17" wheels with winter tires and very careful driving.

I kept my regular tires for last winter, so as long as you don't do any silly driving, are very careful you'll be OK. Better your chances with winter tires and you should be OK.

People had been driving without TCS for years somehow!

If theres just a mild dusting ( less than a half inch ), the stock tires work. If you see more snow than that; I DO NOT ADVISE LEAVING SUMMER TIRES ON.

I've never been a fan of sticky undercoatings because I like working on my car. Instead of undercoatings I would just suggest you just spray under the car often and and put a layer of wax on before the winter really hits.

Nothing to be scared of in the winter with the proper snow tires, my TCS rarely goes off unless I'm parking into packed snow parking space on the streets.

This will be my first RWD car in the winter.

I need to buy some snow tires and wax my baby so she doesn't get fucked up...I wont be driving her much if it starts getting crazy though.

Most of my rock chips and cosmetic damage is from winter 2 years ago. Ive garaged my 8 from November- April ever since then :)

Im not gonna do it its not parked for good till spring but Ill call in sick or may just pick up a 1-2k beater for the blizzard days if the wife stays stuck on 3rd shift as she is currently and uses the Dodge all winter

PSTNLSS 11-16-2008 09:51 AM

I'll be honest I used my 2004 with summer tires last winter in new jersey. There was not that much snow I was fornaute. Just be careful and always be prepared to expect the worst... Anytime pulling out allow time to possible spin or fishtail.

04RX8man 11-16-2008 11:50 AM

I highly reccommend that you put her away in the snow and buy a winter beater trust me it will keep the vehicle looking great and keeps the rust off....

otakurx 11-17-2008 03:33 PM

I've been driving mine in the winter since I got her and no additional rust or anything, infact looks like new still. Just remember, salt doesn't react with water and steal much below 28*F, after a good storm use the car wash and just take it easy. Sometimes you may have to start in 2nd instead of 1st due to the conditions but overall I've had no issue.
