Holy Crap! My 8's a beast!!!

Well I picked up my 8 about six months ago, i've been looking around these forums for a while now and meaning to get on. I finally got the motivation to in the form of getting rear ended. :cussing:I was just sitting at a stop light and someone didn't see me and hit me going 35. The amazing thing is, while the other cars front end got all smashed up, toasted front bumper, hood, headlights, the works, my 8 had just a couple scratches, a small dent and the bumpers a bit bent up. I'm not sure how my car held up so good. Even the cop who wrote the report commented on how well my car held up, and he started asking me a whole bunch of questions about my car. I always figured 8s being a small light sports car would crunch like a bear can in an accident, but no. My 8 makes me happy yet again! :yesnod: Hopefully the shop will have it done and looking primo in a hurry.

What kind of car hit you?

Jedi54 10-28-2009 01:44 PM

Pictures aren't working
glad to hear the car held up well in the fender bender!

The bumpers must have aligned and took the impact.

similar thing happened to me. A guy in a GMC acadia (big SUV) rear ended me going about 30 and All I needed was new paint, our license plates smashed into each other. it just chipped my paint up under the plate.

I was lucky, I seem to always be getting hit by people being oblivious about their surroundings

my 8 was actually standing on the street at school and an is250 pulls out from behind me gets hit by a tahoe and thrown into my car and i just needed my bumper replaced thats it! the is250 had both its doors dented in where it hit my 8 and the other side was trashed by the tahoe so i guess our 8s are brilliant

for rear-ending, the car in the back always get the worse hit. but it is still quite amazing that 8 survives just fine in a 35mph hit. way cool.

Isn't rx8 one of the safest cars on the road?

There was one incident with a guy going 75mph and spun and smashed into something big. The car was destroyed and the driver had suffered a broken back pelvis and trauma. But the coworker he was riding with Walked away, not a scratch on him.

glad to hear the 8 does so well in rear end accidents. sorry you had to experience one to find out.

just wondering about the scenario and playing devil's advocate a little . . . is your car a manual? do you keep your foot on the brake at most stop lights or perhaps just the clutch? there could be surprisingly less damage comparatively, especially in a light car, if it gets hit and there isn't anything attempting to hold it in place - like brakes.

Kusanagi 10-28-2009 10:47 PM

Most modern car front end has crumple zone designed specifically to absorb all kind of impact, including pedestrian, that's the reason why the rear end has significantly less damage.

This happened to me as well in a Ford, some Mitsu rear ended me while I was at the traffic light, the Mitsu front end is all cactus, dropping coolant, oil and debris everywhere, mine did not have a SINGLE scratch!! Took bumper off to inspect the reinforcement bar underneath, all perfect?!

So just make sure you don't rear end anyone, or your 8's front will be the same.

Same thing happened to me basically. A uninsured kid in a 04 mustang nailed me going about 35 or so. He nosedived under the rear end. Hit me hard enough it knocked the battery and airbox loose in the front of the car and popped the lower airdam off. The rear bumper barely dented, I just had two holes where his front license place screws dug into my bumper. It also slightly cracked my rear taillight.

There was no real metal damage, and I have all the work, finding the replacement parts online cheap and my insurance covered my "damages".

I can tell you first hand that none of this applies to school buses. School bus > my rx8.

/\ is that why you've dissapeared?!!?!?

I think school buses are > than most cars on the road

Actually, my car was hit on the first day of school 2008. It's pretty much fixed. I have to take the rear bumper back off and get it back on the one clip which I subsequently popped off. The quarter panel around the the outer edge of the tail light is not 100% flush. It looks good but I can tell where the one corner is still out maybe 1/8th". I moved 25 miles west so I don't head out to Rt 17 meets often.

I'll try to post pictures tonight once i get home from work. A new model sentra hit me, which is probably why there wasn't a whole lot of damage. I saw the guy coming up in my mirror and i was like ohhhh geez here it comes. I tried to go foward but I only took my foot off the brake and put the clutch in before he hit me. I normally sit at the light with my clutch out and the brake all the time, just in case someone rear ends me and sends me flying into oncoming traffic in the middle of the intersection.

What color is your 8? Silver?

What's a "bear" can? or is it bear in a can, like bread in a can?

04RX8man 10-30-2009 07:46 PM

nice to hear the 8 didn't take the beating this time
