High Rpm good or bad??

Hello everyone, my name is James and I am from Hackensack NJ, I just purchased my first rx-8 5 days ago from kel rx8...it is a 2004 gt package with 52,xxx on it...i have been doing some research on some forums on this website...I have never owned a rotary engine before, I have seen some major problems, and some minor problems that rx-8 owners go through to maintain their car, but I have also seen and heard many great things about the rotary engine, and hope to experience them myself. Sorry, talking too much lol anyways, i have heard some people say that you must run an rx-8 at high rpms on a daily basis to get optimal engine durability and to prevent carbon deposits from building in the intake manifold. Is it true that i should rip my rx-8 on a daily basis every so often? and how high?

thanks

james

SORRY FOR THE BAD PICS, JUST TOOK THEM AND ITS LIKE 1 AM lol ILL UPDATE THEM LATER

^Welcome to the club man, Kel's car looked pretty nice before he parted it out. Make sure you post some pics, and remember

A redline a day keeps the carbon away!

Hello and Welcome

Razz1 01-07-2009 09:58 AM

Welcome. Don't forget to read the stickies in the tech section.

Don't forget to go to a local club meet. You will learn everything.

You don't need to do the redline a day like some say. If you have had all the reflashes then just the occasional having fun high rpm is all that is needed. The high RPM will kill your gas mileage.

I commonly run my RX8 at 2~3k in slow areas and usually shift by 4K and have 46K miles without any problem. Just to insure I get some Yamaha "Ring Free" (at Outboard Dealers) to add to the fuel. It is a very concentrated fuel injector cleaner designed to remove the carbon from a 2 stroke outboard motor.

You don't need to redline it per say, but you should always make sure that the engine works through the whole RPM range, and spends a few minutes above 5K every drive. It's pretty easy to manage this seeing how fun it is to do.

Its the people who baby their cars and never let the revs get over 4,000 that have issues with carbon buildup. Most common with AT owners.

When I had my RX8 I found it difficult not to redline it almost everyday, it was just the way the car was built, and too much fun. Enjoy the car.

Don't forget to check your oil every other fill up, just do it while your at the station. And if it gets below 40 there. (pretty sure it does) Your dipstick will look like cappuccino, DO NOT FREAK. It is normal for our cars.

Welcome.

A redline a day keep the carbon away is how i live my life...trust me once u start to drive it and get the feel of it it's tooooo easy to redline or you look down just cruising and ur up around 7krpms haha....welcome and PICS OR IT DIDNT' HAPPEN!!!

jayrx8 01-07-2009 04:35 PM

Thank you all for the advice. Yea I do hear about meets in north jersey around my area every Tuesday, I'll have to get some more info on that n stop by one night. And yea, i hear these rotary engines drink oil, so I guess I'll have to check up on that.

THANK YOU ALL

and I will def post pics, weather has been terrible, so i havent taken any...

only redline 10-15 minutes after coolant has reached operating temps to be on the safe side

04RX8man 01-07-2009 06:31 PM

yeah of course make sure coolant and engien is warmed up completely yes the engine is oil injected to lubricate the apex seals on each corner of the triangular rotor! You def should read up on premix and think about doing it! The 04-08's only have 2 oil injectors (one on each edge of the apex seal) so the middle of teh seal does not get great lubrication premix takes care of this!

jayrx8 01-07-2009 11:46 PM

premix? ill def be sure to read up on that, thanks bud....

Jasonawojo 01-07-2009 11:55 PM

High RPM Goooood.

Stavesacre21 01-08-2009 11:55 PM

I never really redlined much....but I did give it a good run up the band once it was warmed up at least once a day. And don't figure your gas mileage, BTW.

welcome aboard!

updated some pics...

mazdaverx7 01-09-2009 05:01 AM

very nice car! you'll find that owning an RX-8 is an incredible experience and you'll be hard predded to pry yourself out of the seat!

Stavesacre21 01-09-2009 07:16 PM

WOW...either those were taken with a camera phone, or you've got one of the first digital cameras made (perhaps the kind that saved images on a 3.5" floppy?)

at any rate, nice car man!

mryoshi 01-09-2009 07:23 PM

Assuming I dont care about fuel mileage... and that I check my oil level religiously.

How much do you think it will accelerate wear if redline pretty much everytime I am in 1st or 2nd gear?

04RX8man 01-09-2009 07:34 PM

I wouldn't reccommend everytime in 1 or 2nd i think the motor would b ok but it will surly put stress on ur transmission just run it at high rpms a few times aday it does not have to b hammering on it a redlinea ll the time sometime i'll just run mine at like 7k crusing a backroad in 2nd or 3rd just to heat it up and blow that carbon out and off of the rotors/rotor housins

mryoshi 01-09-2009 07:57 PM

I wasnt meaning to clean it out.
It is just pretty darn fun to drive it hard... I dont exactly redline but tend to shift at 7-8k. Maybe its just the novelty of being new to the RX-8 and I will get it out of my system soon...
Just curious what people thought that kind of day in day out abuse might cause to break.
What would I need to upgrade to allow it to handle it?
Or would I just need to accept that I would be rebuilding/repairing often?
