Hi All, Newbie here...!
 

Hi everyone, I just signed up to the AWESOME forum. I loveeee the RX-8 More than any other car and I'm thinking about getting one sooner rather than later.

I currently hold an automatic License only :ylsuper: (yeah yeah I know - I've been drilled every other month by mates/family ) But It's mainly due to laziness lol

Basically I've signed up here for some advice on the RX8.

I've been driving for 2 years, and have a Vauxhall Corsa - as crap as they come tbh and It's time I become part of the flashy-car-club.

So, I have three cars to chose from;

Mazda RX-8.
Audi 05 A3
Mercedes kompressor c230

What's the pros and cons for these cars? I've got Roughly £7k on the vehicle, and £1,500 on the insurance. so £8,500 all in all.

Well...you are on an rx8 club, so I may be a bit biased, but I would go with the rx8 outta those 3 cars. Have you driven any of the aforementioned cars? Drive an rx8 and try telling yourself you don't want one.

Audi A3 basically just a VW Golf.
Merc is no sport scar although bit comfortable than the RX8.

but really the end of the day its you buying the car so you gotta make your decision.

However, I'd like to know why. Whats the reason you prefer it over an A3, or a Merc.

Tbh the merc is pulling me, however I'm just completely in love with the body of the Rx8,- especially the doors and the back of the car mmmm.

well the A3 is just a FWD shopping car, nothing special about it just a 10ft long car.
the Merc is the same reason, once in a while there will be replacements to replace it so is the A3.
the RX8 will be an all time classic because there is only one type of RX8 unlike A3 and C-class.
besides RX8 is more of a sports car for those who want REAL sports car experiences.

On Autotrader there are only 3 automatics, and their all 1.3 litre.

Do most Rx8 come with a 1.3 engine?

I have driven a C-class Kompressor, Camero, Covette, Jaguar and now have an RX8, IMO there is no compression. If you are looking for sports car feel the 8 is the way to go. Even when compared to the Vette. I like the lighter more nimble feel I get in the 8. I always come home from work with this silly little boy gin on my face. The interstate cloverleafs are a blast.

It seems you need alot farther to go with knowledge of this car.

If you don't know a basic item like that, then no, at this point I would say the RX-8 is the only one of the group you SHOULD NOT get.

Research, read more, and then you might be able to add it to your list. Purchase this car blind and you are in for a world of pain, frustration, and hurt.

If you are interested enough in the car you will do the research for it... Nuff' said...

This isn't a piston engined car. This is a rotary. The maintenance and attention it needs is more than what most people are used to. Simple issues snowball into major problems FAST. Terminal even.


For example, skip replacing the coils, the plugs get fouled quickly, the cat starts to fail fast, the cat then clogs, overheats, fries one or both O2 sensors, damages engine seals, and can start fires.



...and that can all happen in the space of ~2,000 miles. Most of it happening in the last ~100 miles.

Assuming your car isn't burnt to the ground, the total cost of repairs doing it yourself will be $140(coils) + $80(plugs) + $60(wires) + $1,400(cat) + $260 (front O2 sensor) + $160 (rear O2 sensor) + $3,500 (engine) = $5,600.

Get a shop/dealer to do it and it's more like $300(coils) + $250(plugs) + $150(wires) + $1,600(cat) + $400 (front O2 sensor) + $300(rear O2 sensor) + $6,000 (engine) = $9,000.






Is this a bit on the extreme end of the example? YES

Am I trying to scare you? YES

Is it true? YES We have examples of all of the above, together even.


From your posts so far, you don't even know what type of mechanical bits are in the car, the basic stuff like what this engine even is. THAT SCARES US.

If you aren't prepared to treat this car right, we don't want you to purchase one. We don't want another one being killed from someone being an idiot, not learning the car they purchased, and then spouting off tons of bad opinions about the car when they should be lighting themselves on fire instead.

the RX in the RX-8 means its a rotary engine, all RX-8's are equipped with a 13B rotary engine. the are all 1.3L but if you convert it to piston engine it is equivalent to a 2.6 inline 4 engine.

OP are you in the UK or what? I have never heard of an automatic only license, and thats all google turned up. Thats crazy, here you can just take the test in any car you want and then drive any car lol.

Anyway, you wouldnt want an automatic rx8. Wait til you can get a manual and if your still interested do more research and get one then.

If you woulda said mercedes SLK I could agree with you, but the kompressor is straight garbage. I know a couple people with them at work, and they are falling apart within 3 years.

On that note, you have to get a special license to drive a standard transmission?
