Help needed on Strut!

Hi guys.
I need help with my strut issue.
I was just told from a local mechanics that my right side rear strut is blown and left one is leaking as well.
He said rear struts are needed to be replaced asap.
So I did some research, but I am bit confused and lost.
Do I have to purchase struts and shocks together?
or can I just buy struts?

Do I need to just buy these?
http://www.andysautosport.com/mazda/...ks/mazdaspeed/

Or can I just buy these?
http://www.andysautosport.com/mazda/...nd_shocks/kyb/

I really do not know much about the car and mechanics.
Your thoughts and help would be appreciated.

Thank you

either is fine. but for the +$30 difference, you can just bolt the mazdaspeed ones in place without having to deal with compressing and uncompressing the spring.

the mazdaspeed struts and shocks will lower the car a little bit as well.

I'm having a little trouble connecting to you sites at the moment.
The RX8 uses shocks. Some people use the term shocks & struts interchangeably. The term strut is used in conjunction with a car that has a McPherson Strut type suspension. The RX8 has an unequal a-arm suspension, therefor it uses shocks.
When replacing shocks, replace them in pairs. Also, if your rears are gone, your fronts are likely going to go away shortly too.

The rx8 uses rear struts. Not shocks

Hmhmhmn yesn I was I'd love a cookie. But I was just correcting alnielsen

ShellDude 04-06-2013 01:38 AM

and to think for the past year we've all been convinced we had shocks

mx35foxracing 04-06-2013 01:42 AM

Didn't look at the date. My bad shelldude I don't know much about the suspension in this car and I'm just reading up on it before I replace my STRUTS and install tein s tech springs.

monchie 04-06-2013 01:49 AM

Shocks, struts, what's the difference...

mx35foxracing 04-06-2013 01:53 AM

Struts are better for performance I typed I'm google struts vs shocks and it will tell you b

Karack 04-06-2013 01:54 AM

at least he corrected the misinformation, which is better than someone stumbling across this thread and thinking they can just bolt on some shocks and not have to worry about springs or compressors. the rears are a bit of a pain in the ass to get on and off these cars so being prepared helps.

i had to think about it for a second, because i knew they had struts all around..

Myardor 04-06-2013 02:09 AM

I just had mine replaced with Konis all around. 06 Shinka with 48K miles.
I really did not pay attention to see if they are shocks or struts.
Also installed Eibach springs.
Wanted to lower the car.

So have oem springs/struts/shocks sitting in the garage.

Let's end this thread with this... KYB Americas Corporation Shocks & Struts | Technical Information | FAQ 15 ...this one sums it up. :p:

Some MacPherson struts have a replaceable shock , so technically, a strut is a shock absorber with a separate outer housing for mounting purposes.

except these "struts" don't have replaceable cartridges.

these struts are struts.

CRO8TIA 04-06-2013 06:43 AM

I do believe you are correct :)
To the OP, how did you go replacing them ?

Mazurfer 04-06-2013 07:15 AM

Wow....................we will argue over anything! :)

Put in my KW Variant 3's on all corners about three weeks ago and loving them!

Shameless plug............I still have my RB springs for sale if anybody wants them.

Please note you will have to modify your bump stops!

Struts are both shocks and springs that are combined in one assembly, used in macpherson and SLA suspension configurations and occasionally in other suspension setups

also I know I’m late to the party
