Help, I am moving to Orlando,FL.

I am making a big move to Orlando, but I have no Idea where are the good locations. Since I am taking my RX-8, it needs to be somewhere safe. Can you help me?? Where can I look for an apartment? Anyone live in the Orlando area??

Thanks,

expo1 06-26-2006 08:59 PM

Hope you like traffic, Orlando is a very congested city with construction always going on. I don't live there, but my mom has since 1986 and thus I visit alot. As for "safe " you should try and avoid apt's with lots of section 8 people in them. You will have to talk to residents to find where those places are.

Thanks for the tips.

I live in DC and nothing is worse then DC traffic. This sucks. I have to get out of here!!

Thanks

Then Driving on I 4 when the theme parks are full will seem like home :)

My best friend from high school is in DC. He also drives to work everyday (no train). I've driven to DC several times. DC has some traffic, but it's not that bad.

I grew up in Orlando, went to college in NC and have been living in Japan for 7 years (6 in Tokyo)... where I do have a car and drive.

Orlando is a very spread out city... think 30-40 minutes to cross the metro area at highway speeds (somewhat legal speeds) on I-4 with no traffic. Ever since Disney arrived in Kissimmee, Orlando has started a boom... which has only grown over the years. Unfortunately over all these years the idiotic majors, county commissioners and govenors have only pandered to tourism and basically ignored other industry (and things that go with it) until recently. This lack of intelligence and foresight has lead to a crappy minimal public transportation system and a lack of highways and such to help with traffic. In recent years there has been some work done, but there remains quite a lot to do. I-4 serves as the main corridor and at rush hour it is usually a parking lot. Hwy 50 (Colonial Drive) and Hwy 436 are heavy traffic main roads. Hell... Orange Blossom Trail (OBT), Orange Ave., Magnolia Dr., John Young Parkway, East-West Expy, Beeline Expy, Kirkman Road, Hwy 441, Hwy 17-92... these are some of the main arteries in Metro Orlando.

Places to live? Winter Park, Maitland, Apopka, Altamonte SPrings, Dr. Phillips... these are a few good areas to hunt for a place to live.

mysql101 06-26-2006 09:51 PM

I used to live in Maitland and Altamonte Springs, everything is close by, and the neighborhoods are pretty good. I was renting, both locations were around 1600-1800 a month, with a one or two car garage.

Funny thing you ask - I was living in NJ at the time. I looked online for apartments, found one, paid for it and utilities, and drove a moving truck down - sight unseen.

rclopez3 06-26-2006 11:28 PM

Thanks for all the info,

I am also planning on just renting a truck and going down. That is why I need as much advise as I can get, I hope get I get a good location. Thanks!

It all depends on what you are moving for. Are you attending college? Where will you be working?

I like Winter Park. But there are a ton of apartments on the East side of Orlando but they are mostly college kids living in them. It will all depend on what you are looking for.

Alot of my friends live around Orlando, and to then it was a big upgrade from living in south miami.
On a good and bad note, alot of the chicks are very easy in orlando. I'm not at all a player but, with in the 2 days I was up at my friends, I was given a few numbers w/o trying. I think people could tell I'm from another place by that un friendly (i dont give a f@#$) look on my face. (chicks dig the differant look)

It's also a good place to act like a Gangsta if you want, cause you'r just up against a bunch of other some what rich kids (mostly white) who act like they grew up in the streets.

Those are just my observations, they may be crazy, but I live in the getto, surrounded by 2k$ Buicks, Chevy's on 4k$ 20"+ rims. (they call it Clown'n.....) They'd never touch my Rx cause it doesn't have 20" rims or speakers glued under the car (getto way of making a lound system for cheap).

I dont even know what to say to this.... Are you kidding me? Please do us all a favor and stay out of Orlando, you make us all dumber just being here.

Aseras 06-27-2006 10:01 AM

What you just said is dumb. I make you all dumber cause the girls can be easy and the kids act getto? Please come spent a week with me in the projects, we have crack heads, hookers and drug dealers all at the gas station. I avoid them , they avoid me. People arent friendly where I live and eye contact will start a fight in many cases. (Aka WTF you looking at?)
I've spent 12-20 years growning up with the people I hear this from, I've also seen it first hand. I did alot of the hydro systems on the cars in that area. I go up for snake shows and other events as well as run supplys up. I used to go up every weekend to hit Badlands, and I get in all the parks free cause my friends work for the Disney.

Excuse me for pointing out what I see. I have spent a good amount of time in that area and raced at speed world.
Orlando is nice, I plan to move up when my g/f finishes her RN.

Trekk 06-27-2006 11:35 AM

I am not sure what parts you hang out in, but I dont see kids acting "ghetto" you on the other hand sound ghetto-fablous. Why would I want to spend time in your crappy part of town? I worked hard for everything I have and you could never catch me in some crack whore area. You seem to enjoy it since you seem to be in no hurry to move out.

You obviously hang out in the crappy parts of Orlando to see what you are speaking of. I have been here for 10 years and dont see the type of people you are talking to. I stil say you are dumb. :jerkit:

Tigster 06-27-2006 01:57 PM

Oh and for finding an apartment check out these people I used them when I first moved here for college.

www.apartmenthunters.com they can help you narrow it down since there are alot of apartments to choose from.

I still live here cause I own my house. (Own as in payed it off, not bad for only 25 years old) after hurricane Andrew the area went getto. Now they are starting to fix it up the area cause the are running out of places to build. With houses going for a mid 300K. I'm in no hurry to sell my house. I would get 250K tops for it with a pool and everything cause it's not new.

Yes, I am Getto fab computer specialist that is the lead guitarist in a punk band...................... cause that adds up? Just cause I live in the getto doesnt mean I'm getto. I've grown up with most these getto people and went to school with them, while they lasted.

Then you go on and admit to the crappy parts of orlando where those type of people might live? That proves my point? or yours? I don't meet those people infront of houses. I met them at Pleasure island and other local hang outs.

Yes you might not find the people I'm talking about if you hang around with the people in snake skin boots and 36" swap tires. My ex-roomate for the past 5 years is with that crowd and works for Orlando police.

I dont know why you choose to toss stones at me. Calling me dumb does what? Prove how civilized you are?

I guess you over looked the part where I said It's nice and I plan to move to Orlando when my G/f is done with her RN.

Big deal you own a house.... I have one too.... As a matter of fact I have had a whole bunch of them. But I really dont care what you do, cause I have this "I dont give a Fcuk" look on my face :yelrotflm

He asked about moving here, not how you pick up girls. I go to the local hang outs, and pleasure island is not one of them since it is well over 70% tourists on any given night. Dont classify a city by those who visit it. Let me guess your other local hang out while you are here is City Walk?

I'd be more than happy to recommend places for someone in Orlando to move, or who to talk to. But dont try to tell someone your pimpish ways.

Trekk 06-27-2006 03:31 PM

I bring my 56 Bel Air to Old town every now and then.

You said "I dont care", yet you keep posting back at me.
Yes every area has a look.

rclopez3 06-27-2006 06:54 PM

Hey thanks for all the Tips,

but I am not looking for a party area. I am actually moving down due to my recent job offer with the OPD. My girlfriend is also with me so I am looking for a safe area. Actually anything would be safer then where I live now, DC, but I would still like recommedations.

I have been searching for places to rent and I have seen alot for @$650-$900. The pictures look very nice but what do you think? Does that sound too cheap to be nice and safe? I did my search on yahoo "Orlando apartments".

Thanks,

Eatsomerice 06-27-2006 08:11 PM

DEEP in waterford area, metro west, and altamonte.............NO PINEHILLS!!!!

Tigster 06-27-2006 08:58 PM

If you are going to take a job with OPD dont they have a "relocation" advisor who works or they can refer you to? If you are going to a an officer alot of places give deals just to have you live there, and park the police car there.

DailyDriver2k5 06-28-2006 09:37 AM

Oviedo is really nice , Tuskawilla area is nice too.(15-20 minutes NE of Orlando. Waterford lakes, the UCf area is nice, alot of college kids but the arae is well put together and kept up despite the college kids. Those two areas are on the NE side of town. West side of town has a diffrent feel all together, like someone mentioned before, stay away from PINEHILLS or as we call it, CRIMEHILLS. Clermont, Hyawasi-spelling) area is nice on the west side. Maitland is nice, a little pricey in some areas, Edgewater is very family oriented, have alot of older Fl homes and established sub divisions.

Downtown Orlando is pretty nice, older homes, older neiborhoods, but Houses, apartments and condos will run you a pretty penny, but you have to expect the trade off because mostly everything is in walking distance from a store or entertainment.

North side of town has Altomonte springs, casselberry,Longwood, Winterpark. These too are nice areas, very trendy and fluent.

Stay away from South Orlando, unless you want your RX-8 broken into every night of the week, stay far away from South orlando. South O-town is where the Airport is,but also where alot of poorer and lower class is at, mostly spanish live in that area. I made the grave mistake of moving to Orlando like you 10 years ago and moved to the South side not knowing about the area. Well got my civic robbed twice and the last time somebody stole it and burned it to the ground.

Orlando is crowded, the outskirt areas, i mentioned are nice to live at, but they too are getting crowded as well. Me and my wife left Orlando last year and moved 45 min. West to Lakeland. Lakeland is a small Orlando, housing is affordable (same house that will run 500k, you can get in lakeland for about 280-300k),and one thing i like about Lakeland , is that it is spread out! I commute to Orlando to work, but i don't mind. I have peace of mind where i live at and i am away from the chaos , traffic, noise, etc.

mysql101 06-28-2006 09:48 AM

heh. One of my coworkers is from Landland. We make fun of him for living out in the country (Polk county), and the unsafe water in that area.
