hello, im 17 now and about 2 get a car, i wanted 2 know if anyone could tell me about the new mazda rx-8

sometimes I feel I'm too young for this car at 23, I definitely wouldn't suggest for someone your age, unless your parents are rich

The RX-8 is a good car, reliable, will last a long time if taken care of, and has good space. But so does an Accord or Civic.

You guys are being WAY too easy on the noobie...

I am 37 and had a lot of sh** given to me a year ago when a 16 year old was driving way to fast (Highway Patrol estimated 135 mph) and went over the cement barrier on an off ramp and killed himself and his 3 passengers. All I heard was. "that is the same car that killed those kids. Why do you want a car like that." Duh, it could have happened in any car. There is GREAT temptation to drive the car fast. It is just too easy to do in an 8.

Point: If you get it, be careful and try to use maturity when you drive. Don't let friends talk you into something that you may live to regreat.

Though, i'm 17 (18 in 5 days), I can tell that the 8 is more of a mature vehicle than the 7's.

My_Mazda, if you get it, just be careful. If you're just gonna "rag it out" then no, if you're just gonna race your friends in there moms accord then no. Keep the very fast driving on the track, and the fast driving under full control (don't try and act cool going 100+ with one hand on the wheel).

I, myself, love this car wayyyy toooo much. I drive it fast when I need to (clear out any carbon build-up) but that's it.

In other words, keep it real. Even if you street-race, you'll be going nowhere with the torque we lack, so keep that in mind. If you're gonna be immature and wreck, wreck something else.

My_Mazda, what's up? I'm 17 too, my B-day was like last week. I currently drive a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi. It's at a whole different level compared to the RX-8. Both cars are just as dangerous if used in an immature way. I test drove the 8 today. It was an amazing amount of fun. The RX-8 is tamer than the STi for sure. Things could potentially turn ugly really quickly as I've learned driving my STi. If I do sell my STi and get an 8, I'm gonna baby it like none other. Have fun with it though man. Not many 17 y.o's like us can get nice cars.

I'm 17 too. The RX-8 is very contradicting in terms of how safe it is for a teen. For the advantages, you have the great abundance of safety features : Side Impact Airbags, Curtains for all passengers, stability Control (probably the most important of them all), Electronic Brake Force Distribution, plus you have incredible emergency handling and brakes that bested by very few (they stop from 60 in around 110 feet). However on the con side, the car can get you into a lot of trouble. What good are all those safety features in the long run, because the sportiness + teenage cockiness means your more likely to have to use them. It really depends on responsibility. Any car can go 100 MPH and get you killed, however, no matter what you say, you're much more likely to drive like an ass in an RX-8 than a 10 year old shit box Honda Civic which most of our peers are accustomed to. Now, if a car hits you while you're stopped at a red light, then the RX-8 is most definitely the safer car to be in, however in the long run, it could really hurt you more than that shit box civic. If you're serious about an RX-8 I recommend driving school for a few reasons, the predominant one being that it shows you how dangerous a car can really be, and also because it teaches you how to control a rear drive sports car of the RX-8's caliber. Now, you wont be able to beat any v-8 mustangs off the line, but you'll soon realize thats not the point of the RX-8. Don't buy it because its fast or cool or you want to be seen. Those are all the wrong reasons and the additional costs of a car like this are not worth it unless in can be truly appreciated. The RX-8 is about complete harmony with the driver. You become one with this car and even traffic becomes entertaining. The whole point here, is that you don't have to drive like an idiot to have a great time. You have to be very responsible and really trust yourself to stay responsible. I constantly have to deal with other kids, especially in the high school parking lot, asking to race or driving like assholes around me. You have to be better than them. In general I would say there are better choices for a new driver, something not so expensive that wont get you into trouble, maybe like an accord coupe or a Volvo s40 or something like that. If you can afford it and are responsible, and are able to avoid temptation (or go to racing school so you no longer have any temptation to drive like a crazy person on the road, save it for the track) then I say the RX-8 is a safe relatively practical way for anyone of any age to have fun. Just realize your driving a bomb (and that goes for any car) and you have the ability to not only ruin your life but anyone else's. If you can stay safe, then I hope to see you on the road. If not, get a normal car until you're mature enough. Stay safe.

^^Agreed w/ what he said. Peer pressure isn't cool at all. I used to get a lot of it when I first got my car and the occasional times I used to drive like an asshole. I don't anymore knowing that I in fact am driving a bomb. Sorry for all the depressing stuff being said but it's the truth and the truth also is that the RX-8 is an amazing car to drive after testing it today.

Well I'm not sure I would go so far as to call them "fuckwits". But they certainly don't, on first inspection, evidence the kind of maturity appropriate for a teenage RX-8 driver. I'm more inclined to judge by maturity than chronological age.

This is one reason why I want to buy a Boxster for my next car. I don't want to see kids who are still breast feeding driving around in the same car I have.

Unfortunately, there will always be rich parents with more cash than brains who will buy their kids whatever they want
