HeadLight questions

Is this probably a stupid question, but i get to ask...
i have a base model 2005 RX8 came with Halogen headlight (no fog-light).
and the low beam headlight just seem darker and darker over the past 3 years.
and i don't think it's because my car is dirty. SO i went to the Mazda dealer (where i got my 8 from) and ask them what i should do. The part guy told me that it will cost more than $1600 to get a HID or Xenon headlight (need a kit and stuffs), and if i get it somewhere else i might void my warranty. SO..i ask him is there a cheaper way to better the headlight visibility, and he said that i could just go to autozone and get a brighter lightbulb (i think he meant a brighter halogen lightbulb). and i might want to take the lightbulb back to the dealer and let them install it, and then he said that will cost about 45 to 90 dollars just for installation.
so i just wanna ask you guys how to make my low-beam head light brighter without getting a HID kit(don't have that kinda money now), and can anyone suggest some good choices.
thanks a million

Yep OEM HID will cost you $1600 for a piece.

I hate Mazda deale, :bsflag: that everything will void their warranty.
Also $90 for bulb swap, what a rip off!.

Get an after market HID. Good Japanese one cost around $160 shipped. Just dont get cheap cheap $60-100 one, it will be dead in less than 100hrs. Good HID will last for (almost) life of your car.

Try DIY. It is easy. (and Super easy for halogen bulb swap, check your car manual for how)

thanks for the input.
but i kinda don't wanna get a HID kit now, because of all the installation (not much of a DIY kinda person). so can i just get a brighter halogen lightbulb?
i checked out advanced autozone's website and they have this lightbulb saying that's very bright and costs only about 15 to 28 dollars a piece.

so is this a good alternative for the HID? and which one is better or brighter?

thanks for all the help.
Best

just go to a parts store and get some newer bulbs.

get some Sylvannia Silverstar Ultras, call it a day.

NgoRX8 08-25-2008 02:59 PM

definitely go get some silverstars. just make sure you have plenty of room behind the wheel well to work with when you put them in. if placed in wrong you could damage the clip/retainer.

luis@championsmotorsports 08-25-2008 03:04 PM

we sell PIAA h7 star whites and the h7 extreme plus we currently run the extreme plus and they are great...pm for price..

Razz1 08-25-2008 09:40 PM

I hear Sivlerstars are good.

lilring 08-25-2008 09:46 PM

install is pretty easy, turn your wheels and take off the iner wheel wells up front and go through there.. ( it is easier if you take your wheels off so you have more room to play with.. feel free to PM for more info

Jedi54 08-25-2008 09:47 PM

I've used silverstar in jsut about every car I've ever owned, they're much better then oem halogens

Razz1 08-25-2008 09:48 PM

Siver stars are a Halogen. right?

lilring 08-25-2008 09:55 PM

^ yes

EdwardsB 08-25-2008 10:01 PM

maybe he was trying to get you to swap out your entire headlight assembly for $1600 with a brand new one?!?

Get new bulbs or if you want HID go after market as the previous posts have stated.

Thanks for all the inputs...
Sylvannia Silverstar Ultras sounds pretty good.
just a quick question...is it street legal?

NgoRX8 08-25-2008 11:56 PM

Only when you turn them on at night. Leaving them off at night time isn't street legal at all.

ok..
i was trying to see if i can find a better deal on the Sylvannia Silverstar Ultras (H7SU) which is 28 dollars a piece on autozone website.
then i search amazon and find this one which is 38 dollars for two...but what confuses me is that on the picture it says "H7" on the top right...
and one of the person who wrote a review saying that it's not really H7SU
but i found this "Item model number: H7 SU BP TWIN" listed under the product detail.

http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-H7-Si...9732307&sr=1-1

i know there are: H7, H7ST, and H7SU(the one i want).

so..is this one H7 or H7SU?
or anyone know where to get a good deal?

thanks a million

I'd just try out some generic H7 bulbs to see if it gets any brighter.
Those sylvania bulbs are bright but they dont last long and they cost alot.
And replacing the H7s are easy as pie.

Not sure why the dealer would want to replace the entire headlight assy :S

and I'd stay away from Hid conversion kits.

luis_o_98 08-26-2008 08:01 PM

you dont have to go through your wheel wells to get to the lights you can do it from the top its very easy and only took me about 10 mins

CarAndDriver 08-28-2008 11:55 PM

I've used PIAA, Sylvania Ultra, and Hoen for fogs. Does Hoen make bulbs for the main bulbs? All seemed fine to me.

I really like their bulbs for our fog lights. They match the HIDs pretty well.

The inside plastic of my headlights is really dirty, how do I clean them?

If the inside is dirty chances are you'll have to remove the assembly and bake it to get the front lens seals soft enough to pull open. Not sure how the grime will react to the heat though. How did you get the inside dirty?

yeah the silverstars are good but i would go with a jap conversion kit to HID very very simple if you can work a wrench and have a brain you can do it....

I don't know. It's just got some oily-looking goo on it.
