Has anyone thought of a cup holder mod?

This would be a replacement for where the front seat cup holder is. It would be a deep rectangle and it could then be used as a console.

I generally don't drink while driving a stick. And there would be two holders in the rear I could use--with a really long straw.

I believe it is already as deep as possible. The trans and drive shaft run through the console.

I find that the cup holders get in the way of other things that I could otherwilse store in there. I haven't really looked into it, can the holders be removed without any cutting? I'd look for myself but my 8's in Hawaii and I'm in for Virginia for a while. That might be enough space for me, and I don't drink while I'm driveing either.

I occasionally drink but I find that when you actually put a cup in the holder it gets in the way of the stick so you kinda have to hold your hand at a slight upward angle, little annoying

good idea tho

i use the back cup holders i have long arms :)

i want to make that into a cd storage compartment..

I use one of the cup holders for a bottle and the other one for holding things like my cell phone etc..... I try not to carry too many cds in the car so I'm fine with the space in the back by the nav drive and the space in the center of the console (when cup holder is open), I think I can carry 5 or 6 that way plus the 6 in the changer.... I don't like those visor holders much but that could work in a pinch.....

You can always use the cupholders as a little oven to keep things warm too! :D

BlueGrimRX8 05-18-2004 07:41 AM

Another member here in Jax was thinking of doing this, but decided against it. It would take a lot of cutting as well as the heat problem, probably not a cost effective CD holder.....But you can definitely heat up your lunch!

IMHO, the center console cup holders for the driver are worthless for that purpose. You can't put your cawffee there without sticking your elbow in it. I wired my light switches to that compartment. Allows me to turn on/off the undercar LEDs and plasma lights and neons in the trunk.

Being an habitual cawffee drinker, I would like a convenient place to put my cup. The 350Z had ONE design which I liked...and that was a fold-down cup holder, to the right and above the center console.

I have coffee with me every morning, and I find I am resting my arm on the top of the cup while shifting, I'd rather have them somewhere else.

Yeah, I would much rather have storage there instead of cup holders.. Who drinks when they drive anyway?

Is it so hard to wake up 10 minutes earlier and have your coffee at home before getting into the car?

Kid_Icarus 05-18-2004 06:56 PM

Its called the 2 o' clock munchies at del taco with the extra large mr. pib. Thats why you would have a drink in the car.

Has anyone found an effective aftermarket cupholder or installed a "beverage containment system" and if so where?

ranger4277 05-18-2004 07:25 PM

I just have a CD case laying flat over top the cupholder holes with my cellphone resting atop that. At least I can route my charger cable through to the rear section where the second power socket hides.

I don't have a problem with it. If I have a drink in the cupholder, I'm in cruise mode, not hell-raising mode. I wait until the drink's empty and then go back to hooliganism. In some cases, I'll put my drink in the rear cupholder if I want my cake and need to eat it too. I will say that the cupholders get really hot, as does the rest of the interior, when the temps get up in the 80's and above. AC is necessary at a lower temp than any other car I've owned.

I don't mind having cupholders (even though I seldom use them). what I do mind is when the cupholders ruin an otherwise convenient place to put stuff!

I put my phone in there and closed the lid. it moved and it took me a while to get the lid open again, the phone jammed the door closed.

I'd love it if the cupholders weren't there. I'd love to be able to remove them.

Why couldn't they have made a rectangular-shaped cubby, with a plastic piece that dropped in to turn it into cupholders? that way you could have it either way.

blue flash 05-25-2004 02:59 PM

i'm sorry but i dont have a problem with my cupholders i use small glasses or cans . whats the problem? i have too have something to drink while i drive

In the past Mazda has released conversions to/from cupholders. Maybe next year?
