Has anyone hooked up a hitch to their RX8 ?
I need to tow a small trailer that will be about 1000 lbs.
From searching this board I recall someone saying that Mazda USA has recommended that you don't tow with the RX8 ... can anyone tell me if they have successfully hooked up a hitch or towed with thier car ? |

It's an actual Mazda option overseas, so I bet it's ok for 1000 pounds max. But just out of curiousity, what's the second vehicle in the family? |

I just installed a hitch on it for the Karts to be towed but my wife doesn't drive a manual and with my 3rd child coming she needs her truck anyway. I was thinking of getting a 3rd car but nothing special, maybe an old Toyota or Honda and using it as a tow vehicle plus it could get me to the office on snowy days |
If you can find a hitch it should be ok. Owner manuals never recommend towing with passenger cars. My Accord and 626 included, but I towed with them anyway. I had a 91 Acura Integra and had no problem towing 1000 lbs. All the cars were stick shift. The Integra only had 130 hp and 135 lbs of torque. So I think it would be ok but impracticle with a sportscar like the 8.

Yeah, I always found it interesting that the North American versions of Mazda's owner's manuals always stated that you absolutely can not tow anyting with their cars.
Then, in the manuals for the European markets, they give specific recomendations on mounting trailer hitches, wiring and load limits for towing with the exact same cars. Lawyers.... |
Yeah, what a krock with the laywers...
My wife has a Volvo V70, so I plan on attaching the hitch to it and towing when needed. She can drive a stick well, so that's -- fortunately -- no worry for me. |

Yes, there is a hitch available in the UK and Europe as an option/accessory. I got the part number from someone over there and verified that it is not available in the US.
I had someone check on its availability and it can be had for about $1000, which includes the hitch and shipping. I, likewise wanted one to pull my motorcycle trailer, like I do behind our Miatas, however, not for that price. If you perform a search for" trailer hitch", you will find some discussion, including the fact that one member contacted DeLan, who makes hitches for other than the usual popular cars, like the Miata, however, they indicated they would more than likely not make one for the RX-8. Ernie $1000 is crazy . . . I can't beleive something as simple as a hitch can't be ordered at the local dealer ... To think I'm going to get stuck buying another car just to pull a trailer :( |
