Harmful A/C rpms?
Hey everyone. I searched for this using a few different keywords but found nothing.
Since summer is rolling in - I've been using the A/C a little bit more. If i decide that I'm going to put my foot into the throttle and wrap up the RPMs I usually turn the A/C & fan off. I was curious if anyone had seen any problems with running the accessories like these while running the car into the higher RPM? The engine can do it, but accessories I imagine are not built to be hitting 9k rpm. Another factor as to why I turn these off ... frees up HP. Either way - I was just curious if anyone has burnt out or ruined their air conditioning unit doing this. Thanks all! |
I live in Kailua Kona, HI and my RX-8 is black on black so A/C is a requirement unless I'm up mauka (at a higher elevation). I haven't experienced any negative effects during spirited driving.

The A/c automatically disengages during hard acceleration.

yeah, something like over 7,000 rpm the AC is shut off for 5 seconds.
|
I read that the A/C cuts off at 75% throttle too. Can't remember where I read that though.
|
LOL, I actually didnt know that! I always wondered why it got colder when I let off the gas lmao.
|
Yep, Over 7K RPM the A/C will *turn itself off*
|
i didn't know it either until i watched the videos that someone posted not too long ago

Mazda has been doing this on their cars for 30 years.

Well, now I know about my AC... *goes out to test*

I broke my AC in my Camaro SS when I rev'd the engine in neutral after installing my headers. The AC does disengage under high load, but the engine spun up too fast and toasted the AC.
So my advice is: if you're driving in gear and floor it, you'll probably be ok but I would not rev the engine in neutral with AC on. |

yeah, that just speaks about crappy american engineering.
above 68% throttle the a/c cuts off. the engine will never over-rev the a/c. |

Yeah I have noticed the A/C does kinda go between warm and cold. The A/C in my 04 is absolute garbage. I took it in a few weeks back and the dealer replaced my "A/C amplifier" (wtf?) and it did absolutely nothing. Is this something that other people have experienced?
