grinding in reverse

Occassionally hearing a grinding noise in reverse...any ideas? Tranny or brakes. How to determine, hmmhttp
Any insights?

when you give gas, keep holding on the shift knob and pull it fully into gear

chancejat 05-30-2008 10:32 PM

ha, mine does the same thing, like he said keep pressure and slowly let out the clutch,

Reverse has no synchro and should mesh best at idle. You might be bumping the throttle a little when you hear that grind, or have a slightly out-of-spec gear.

KostasNK 05-30-2008 11:50 PM

The reverse gear doesn't have synchros,so when you put reverse in you can hear some grinding. To resolve this, press the clutch put 1st, put it into neutral and then put the reverse gear.
It wont happen again this way...
:D

Thanks...will give the suggestion a try and see. Doesn't happen all the time, just occassionally.

I guess I learned something new today. Mission Accomplished!

I always put it in and out of reverse about 2 or 3 times to b sure it is in so i don't grind into reverse.....

Renesis07 06-01-2008 12:48 AM

if you put it in and let off the clutch SLOW, you will feel it engage and youll be all good.

Spinning Sushi 06-01-2008 01:16 AM

I tend to pop it into neutral, clutch depressed, rev it a bit, press on the clutch, then go into reverse. It seems to work every time for me.
Also known as double clutching. :)

You have to do all that I said above while pressing the brake pedal, so the car won't move! It eliminates the grinding while engaging reverse gear.
The only grinding I had one,or two times was while engaging reverse not in any other occasion!

Hey sweet I thought only mine made this sound. I pretty much do the same now, I cycle through a few gears after start up like into 1st, then 2nd, then 5th etc and then into reverse. I just be overly deliberate when shifting into reverse, and when I see the white lights reflect off the wall in my rear view mirror then I know I am all the way in reverse.

To avoid grinding noises when shifting to reverse:

1. make sure car is not moving
2. depress clutch fully and wait 2 or 3 seconds
3. move shifter to reverse

Side notes: the 2 to 3 second pause is for a warm transmission. When the tranny is cold, 1 or 2 seconds will suffice. Also, press the clutch pedal to the floor.

οkay, all the above are great advice, here's the last one:

i guess the reverse on the 6-speed gearbox is far right and back; right? (i am on a 5-speed 192 one)

when stationary, switch to 2nd or 4th gear before switching to reverse... !!!

that will take care of the problem as well !! :eyetwitch :eyetwitch :eyetwitch

problem is i did 40K klm not doing it before my gearbox stopped grinding on its own...

:uhh: :uhh: :uhh: :uhh:

Bad news for people here... rx8s do in fact have reverse synchros. I just replaced my reverse synchro and it still grinds if im not careful. :/

ken-x8 07-28-2011 05:06 AM

How does a reverse synchro work?

No diagram of the gears in the shop manual (at least not in the version I have), but part of the procedure for checking the clutch engagement point is to try going into reverse and see whether it grinds. Not exactly behavior I'd expect for a gear that has synchromesh.
