intersting link, but wouldn't it be easier to just to get some mesh at a hardware store or even better at McMaster-Carr Its probably cheaper and you can pick the exact size you want.

Killerking1964 02-03-2004 12:24 PM

If you want cheap, as in crap! OK, here's a link that I found that has some nice inexpensive grill mesh. Less than 5 bucks for a big sheet.

dude... cheap does not equal crap. A lot of the time it does but not every time.

All I am saying is that you can get the same exact product from McMaster-Carr a lot cheaper. Unless they are doing a custom paint job then I don't see the reason to go through the middle man.

ok.. as one of those DIY people I have designed, and fabricated many things. While in college we used to order a bunch of raw stock, material and tools from McMaster-Carr.

Their website is www.mcmaster.com

They honestly carry everything.( including kitchen sinks!) Makes lowes or Home Depot look like a small mom and pop outfit. They normally get you your shipment within 3 business days!

I did a search for "metal mesh" and they do sell the wire mesh that was advertised. Its listed under "expanded metal mesh". If you browse to the catalog page you can pick the size of the pattern you want and even the metal type. Only catch is that you most likely would have to pick up your own adhesives. I am not too sure on the finish though but I would assume it would be pretty good. I was thinking of picking some up within the week.

Just remember that mesh will reduce airflow to the oil coolers to some degree; how much depends on the mesh and the precise air flow pattern to it...

Killerking1964 02-04-2004 05:25 PM

Well, the stuff I ordered from Typhoon Motor Sports is JDM Race Tech Aluminum mesh, so I think that the air flow will not be a problem. And for $13.98 (including shipping!) for a very large piece, it's gonna be hard to find a bargain better than that one!

MD8 02-06-2004 05:27 PM

Maybe this is obvious to some but, how are you taking the measurements/shape in order to cut out the mesh pieces to cover the coolers? I would really, really like to avoid removing the bumper... Cheers

Killerking1964 02-06-2004 05:42 PM

Do a rough cutout template on thin cardboard/flexible media and then refine it to the perfect fit and then cut the mesh.

flatso 02-06-2004 08:27 PM

what would you use to cut the steel mesh such as Typhoon sells?

Last_D8 02-06-2004 08:51 PM

To "KillerKing1964":

Any place that is selling "regularly $39.95 but special for you today $4.95" is either selling 'crap' (quote) or is a slimebag ripoff place that you oughta just step away from.

Killerking1964 02-06-2004 10:07 PM

I got the mesh today, and it is really nice. Not crap or a ripoff! Nicely constructed. To cut it you can use either a jigsaw w/ a fine metal cutting blade or tin snip shears since it is aluminum.

RX-8 friend 02-06-2004 10:21 PM

We just used the plastic mesh sold for eavestroughs. It will not hurt the cooler if it rubs, it stops rocks etc. and it's easy to push in from the front. We used black zip ties to secure it in place. It's black and looks fine (when you can see it).

Have you installed the grill on your 8 yet?....picts. How did you find Typhoon Motor Sport? Is there a link on the web (I can't find it)? I'm interested in getting the same thing since it's cheap.

Oil Cooler Protection was a hot topic last summer...

In addition to the one RX-GR8 already referenced:

I'm waiting to do mine in the summer... too darn cold to be on the floor of the garage.
