gotta question about mazda maniac

so i have a 07 rx8 but its an at and i was wondering if mazda maniac will remove the rev limiter?

jasonrxeight 04-06-2011 02:00 AM

why?

taylorhall20 04-06-2011 02:13 AM

thats the main reason that the automatic is so much slower than the manual right?

StreetGT 04-06-2011 02:31 AM

Errr no....

The auto's have a 4 port engine which produces less power than the manual 6 ports.

Outta luck I'm afraid. Go FI or swap?

autos have a different engine that only has 4 ports instead of the 6 on manuals.
4 speed autos have very long gears which is not helping.
autos have more powertrain loss.

True for 2004 and 2005, however no; 2006+ AT models have 6 speed transmissions and 6 port engines.

The main reason it's so much slower is that the torque converter eats up all the power. Since there isn't a solid connection between the wheels and the engine, there is more loss.

taylorhall20 04-06-2011 03:45 PM

yea i have a 6 port and 6 speed at... is it worth it or should i save my money and try to trade for a manual?

JUNKyardHOE 04-06-2011 03:51 PM

part of the reason they detuned the engine for the A/T is because they (Mazda) couldn't get over the huge engineering nightmare it would have been to design a transmission to handle the 9000 RPM's that the M/T can

Razz1 04-07-2011 04:41 PM

Keep it.

Manual is not that much fast.

This is a drivers car.

Take it to an Auto X you will see why.

9krpmrx8 04-07-2011 04:58 PM

Yeah unless you are drag racing, the power difference is not so huge from the 6 port auto and the 6 port manual. I know two pretty fast guys running autos. Here is one at H2R.

^Hey, I'm cornering flat with stock sport yellow sways bars!

The 6spd auto is Aisin, made in USA, and used in Toyotas, and many others.

It might eat some extra hpr, but it only does 2700 rpm @ 80 mph in 6th, and that's after I geared the rear wheels down by putting 225/40r18 instead of 225/45r18 tires.

Gearing it down that 3% helps it jump out of a corner better.

I never was an auto fan, but I'm not having any squeeks, grinds, missed shifts, or clutch loosening.

In other words, the 8 is fun with either transmission, just like girls; It's all good!

6-port, 6-speed A/T is actually a pretty decent performer.
I've dynoed a few with the same output as the M/T.

I usually set the rev limiter to 9000 on the 2006 - 2008 A/T-equipped cars. I don't think I've seen any tranny failures yet.

A manual car is way more fun to drive than an automatic even if they make the same power. Not to sound like a snob, and if you enjoy your AT more power to you but I'd take a slower MT over a faster AT any day of the week...

StreetGT 04-08-2011 01:37 PM

^ Same. Driving a manual just changes everything.

Not only can MM raise the fuel cut on an AT, you will need him to do it. AccessTuner Race doesn't support autos, afaik, or at least you don't get any calibrations to work from.
