Got an RX-8!!
 

Well, after a year of wishing and stringent saving, my parents made my little dream happen! Today I picked up a 2004 RX-8, 6sp, GT, Black on Black, with all the options.

Car has just over 47K miles and is in good shape minus a few scrapes on the rear. The Bumper-to-Bumper warranty just expired, and the Powertrain is good a little while longer. We also purchased a third-party warranty for long-term protection as I will use the car when I go away to college. I've been reading through these forums for a while so I've picked up most of the basics relating to oil usage and such, but I have an issue I'd like to verify.

The vehicle exhibits vibration throughout, beyond just the normal shifter vibration, whenever the revs settle into a typical idle (~800rpm). Revving the car in neutral or moving resolves this, while messing with the clutch in neutral or changing gears with the clutch depressed does not make any difference. From what I've gathered on here this is most likely the motor mounts as it runs fine otherwise. I'll take it into Mazda to have this looked at sometime this week and to verify that 4206F has been preformed, but motor mounts are covered by the powertrain warranty correct?


Aside from that, I love the thing so far and this being my first manual car, it has been a very interesting experience, varying somewhere between stalling and chirping the tires! :) Did drive it home from the dealer in traffic with only a few remarks from Dad though. ;)

Check your Plugs and Coils.


Just swapped out mine with 35k and its now smooth as silk.

Awesome, looks like you researched your car well :) I'm glad to have someone as intelligent as you join on our forum. Mine exhibits the same behaviors and I also suspect the mounts to be the root cause of this. I'm bringing mine into Mazda regarding this issue as well... after I swap out my midpipe back to my stock cat that is (So they won't void my warranty) :)

Someone posted a thread awhile back stating that unless Mazda can prove that the problem originated from a particular mod that you have, they can't void your warranty.

@Jason, It might just be the motor mounts, there's a handful of things that could cause the rough idle you're experiencing. Have you noticed and lack of power or a knocking noise coming from under the hood? Mazda had changed my Motor Mounts and Coils before saying "Hmmm, lets just put a new engine in it!". So here I am in my rental :p

Have them take a good look at it.

I haven't noticed any issues except for the vibrating while at idle in neutral, but I'll be sure to have them go over everything, and I'm unsure if the vehicle has had the 4206F recall done at this point as well. If not, assuming they do it right, that should clear or not clear the engine itself as an issue.

Misfiring near redline would suggest plugs or coils generally right? Just noticed that whenever I go above 7-8K rpm I get a flashing cel. Either way, I'll have Mazda pull the codes when I go there later this week.

@SayNoToPistons: Probably could have phrased that better but anyhow. I made the down payment, and continue to pay most of my gas & insurance. Without my parents though, I couldn't have gotten it as I can't afford to make the car payment as well in high school. :)

my rx8 was my first manual as well. first few months are interesting. if you want to get acquainted with your car on an accelerated pace. check out any high speed drivers education courses. (aka tracking)

Awesome car man!

My first time driving the car on the highway involved bumper to bumper traffic for a few miles. I was very concerned, as this is my first manual car (and first car), but I managed to get through it fine. It is an awesome car, and you will always be longing to drive it!

Oh yes, come late November I'm going to take it autocrossing with local BMWCCA. Did it a few times with my old 1993 Automatic BMW, but I was told by the drivers of the stick shift cars there that having a manual really changes the game :naughty:

Regarding learning manual. I can get from point A to point B, generally only stalling and/or chirping the tires once a trip. Now I look forward to going out and practicing each day rather then fearing them red lights. Should be good by the time I go autocrossing. :)

edit: once i was driving my 1986 240dl wagon, and it got stuck in overdrive. nothing more annoying than trying to sound like a ricer.. in an old volvo wagon... :uhh: :lol2:
