Sad day

Only made it to 2,200 miles before somebody decided my car was too nice... keyed from the front fender all the way to the back door

It's sad that there are people out there who can not stand it when others have something nice... must be a horrible life...

Anyway, it's not too deep, I can't see metal. Any suggestions on how I should handle this?

I am sorry to hear that. Your insurance should cover it under comprehensive. Even just a surface scratch will require a repaint.

 

buffing might get most of the scratch off the finish... I also saw a thread here recently about a paint guy using spot painting then buffing, the guy who posted it said you cannot see the blemish afterwards.

 

I was hoping to avoid using the insurance... it already went up quite a bit from my Integra.

I'll ask around about the buffing, that may be the way to go as long as there is no metal exposed.

Why oh why do people do this?

 

for moderate scratches on my parent's (note "parent's", not my car ) white es300, i used rubbing compound no. 7, or even no.9 (strong stuff!) and scratches come right off. Just don't use it too much or you'll eat through your clear coat!!

 

maybe that is a good reason to buy a black rx8, isn't it easier then to go over the line with some special finishing paint?

Seriously though, I sympathize with you... I've had cars vandalized before, and I know how painful it can be.

The car is too new for me to try it myself so I'll take it to a local shop to see what they can do for me.

I guess what bothers me most is why do people do this!? What makes them think "you have something cool and that pisses me off so I am going to mess it up" vs "wow that's a really cool car"?

Well, that depends. I've seen people get their cars keyed when they park across two spaces in a crowded lot, or take two spaces in an empty lot but near the front.

Aside from that though, I've rarely seen a car get keyed but it happens.

It's weird though, because keying your car didn't get the other person a thing. They don't benefit in the least by messing with your car. Makes you wonder at the motivation.

Man, I hate people like this. They shouldn't have a set of keys to use. I'm sorry to hear this. Good luck getting it fixed.

 

Go to a detail shop, ask him if he can wet sand it out, if he says yes ask him if he can do it on the deepest part of the scracth so you can see the end result, if you are happy with how much you can/can't see it then pay him to do the whole thing.

 

My sympathies. Been there, done that, to the tune of $3,500 on almost all of my old MX-6 (jealous "I thought I was the current boyfriend and I'm following you home and I'm an insecure ******* on top of it" routine). I'd just say listen to the folks here. Vandalism should be covered by your comprehensive, with a lower (or in my case, zero) deductible. Pick a good shop, and you'll forget about the hurt soon enough.

 

What state do you live in? Most states have laws againts insurance companies increasing rates for a non at fault accident. VA/MD/DC for instance.

 

Everytime I hear a story like this I feel like fighting...lol, gosh...I'm so sorry...I hope the best!
